Need help with 1997 540I wheels

Just bought this mint 1997 540I. 36K miles from some lady who barely drove it. I love the car but need to get rid of the stock wheels. So here is my deal. The wheels on there now are 16". My problem is I am not sure on the max wheel size. Is it 17", 18" 19"? I am sure someone will reply with "d" all the above. Also, not sure what staggered means etc. All I would like to know is what my limitation is here and what size(s) will fit. Really appreciate any help I can get on this one. Thanks.

Up to 20" will fit the car, but keep in mind that ride gets progressively more firm each increase in wheel diameter. Staggered simply means running a wider tire in the rear (much like the 540I six speed cars of that era).
