can someone explain the vanos system ie.. what it does and also how i know if my 94 325i has it.

Your 94 325i has single Vanos. Basically, the Vanos system uses oil pressure to turn a helical gear and vary the timing of the intake cam thus producing more power and less emissions. Similar in concept to the Honda V-tech system. Later models had double vanos where the intake AND the exhaust cam timing were both variable.
