This has been bugging me for some time, but I was wondering if anyone knew the actual mechanical differences between the LHD and RHD cars. Are they made on the same assembly line, or are they different. Also, I know that many cars have an offset engine to give the driver room for the pedals, would this be the case on the e36. Also, the I6 slant toward the right side of the car, which seems like it would make for a tight fit for the steering mechanisms over there.

I know that the interiors are basically a mirror image of eachother, but, do the cars share enough common parts, mechanically, that one could swithch a LHD car to RHD, or vice versa, or are the metal structures different from eachother too.

i think the engine bays are setup different like crap for brakes, stering, and few other things. Just search on google for engine bay pictures and i am sure you will see what the difference it.

In spartanburg they are one behind the other going down the assembly line. One car maybe going to japan and the next one for the states, it's amazing how they keep it all straight.

Sounds like it is time for me to make another trip to the Spartanburg plant, and see how they do it. The last time I was there, the z4's had just started production, but wouldnt hit dealers for another month. They gave a full plant tour, but I dont remember seeing any RHD vehicles being built on either the x5's or z4's.
