I searched a couple of different forums on this topic and have not been able to find much info specific to the E39 540. I am looking at the VFE stage 1 s/c kit and am wondering how reliable (or practical) it would be for a daily driven 2003 540i 6-spd. I drive about 200 kms. a day (round trip) to commute to and from work. That distance is about 95% highway. On evenings and weekends I would have the occasional city drive... but no more than about 20% of my mileage is city driving. My car currently has 128,000 kms (80,000 miles).

What are everyones' thoughts on that?

You must be filling up your tank every third round trip. I believe with a S/C installed on an e39 540i MPG will decrease significantly.
Sorry but no clue on VF reliability.

Yep, every 3rd round trip I do fill. I do not let my tank run too low so it is usually on the 3rd day out that I fill. If I wanted to squeeze it I could run it until day 4 morning but I wouldn't do that to the poor fuel pump... lol

I realize that my mileage will decrease, but on that note any real world experience on exactly how much will be helpful. I know that it largely relies on how heavy your right foot is... lol but I would not mind getting an idea from other guys who have this setup.

Some of the responces are from F/I owners. They probaly would have better insight on the subject. Mike Kelly

Now I can only speak in terms of a 530, but my mpg didn't really drop all that much after my VF charger was installed. Well that's after I stopped mashsing the trottle to the floor for grins, and settled into realistic dail driving.

15,000 miles and 14 months with no issues other than routine maintenance.

Well that's not a VF kit but I believe they're similar.

I do not have a SCrg on my 540 but I see no reason why your milage should deteroriate a significant amount.

If you are light on the throttle I would expect your milage would not stray far from stock. Sure you are spinning the SCrg but that alone will have little affect.

Hey gas is expensive, but the SC power is worth the trade off. I just dropped a VFE in my 530i which significantly helped boost my grin effect. I haven't noticed much of a gas mileage drop off. I think it really depends upon how heavy your right foot gets after you install the "go faster" mod.
