Proof to me that this forum is incredibly helpful:

My check engine light came on this morning. Using the information I got from the forum (using the "gas pedal" trick) I checked it myself, and got a fault code of "1221," which is an OEG sensor. I just had my oxygen sensor changed, so it's time for an appointment at the shop.

Now, does anyone have any ideas how I can turn the check engine light off until I get to the shop? Any magical tricks?

Thanks, all.

Check the plug/connector on the O2 sensor mate cos if it is a new one then you shouldn't be getting code 1221

I know very little about car mechanics, and even less about BMWs. I don't even know where the sensor is located. But, I'm learning as fast as I can, and someday I'll be able to do "light" mechanical work.

If it is the sensor, my shop will fix it no charge. I learned early on to make the mechanic my very best friend.

If you read the post about the pedal trick, you also know how to clear the codes. Once the car runs through ALL the codes and you get the end or no more codes stored code, all you have to do is hold the gas pedal down for 10 seconds and it clears ALL the codes. bad idea if you want your mechanic to check on that code, but good if you want your light off.

This may help buddy - http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/E36-O2_Sensor/E36-O2_Sensor.htm

If it is still playing up after you clear the codes....it will just come back!
