Does anybody know how for how long the fuel pump last in 318IS? Mine is 10 years old with 220 K on the clock. Is it wise to exchange it for a new one at this stage as a preventive measure?

It is really hard to say how long will last. I have seen some die early and have seen some go for ever. It is really personal preference on when to change it out. IMO

Think you should buy one and put it down. No need to change it till it goes. You could however change you water pump and other such parts that could really risk hurting your engine if they just give up the ghost suddenly.

+1. If you have not changed your water pump and there is no evidence it has been done then you want to get it changed.
They came with plasic impleears that go go with no warning except your temp gauge goes into the red in 10 seconds flat.
Pumps with metal impellars are only around $60 USD so well worth it.
As for the fuel pump, i would not worry about it until you think it is failing. If it aint broke, then dont fix it!!!! (this is not true for the water pump as it is a ticking timebomb if it has the plastic)

We are talking about german enginering here. These things donīt pack up that easily. I had a 1993, 325td and It wasnīt idling round anymore. Fuel pump packing up. I had the RPM increased so that it idled round again. Drove the car for another 2 years before I sold it with no problem.
