Has anyone here actually pulled things apart to clean the ICV? I don't mean dreamt about it after reading DIYs. I mean have actually done it...

I just finished pulling, cleaning and assembling, but I want to hear how other people handled it.

i have read on this forum i think and others of people doing that and working for them. I havent had the need to do that yet and if i do i will prolly just replace it with a new one.

I'll tell you what...if you're going down to do any work near it, you might as well keep it. Cleaning it is definitely the easiest part.

you dont have to take it apart to clean it. all you have to do is take it off and fill it with carb cleaner or somthing like that. then shake it for awhile and repeat untill most of the black buildup is gone. thats how i did mine.

ive cleaned out my.... My dad cleaned out the whole throttle butterfly and all that mumbo jumbo in my old e30. It was a big headache and didnt resolve my lumpy idle...
The driveway is still stained from when the carby cleaner dripped onto the floor. Memories....

Heres my DIY for you,

E36 M52 ICV (Idle Control Valve) Replacement.

Part details

New ICV BMW Part number 02801405
£76.26 + vat from eurocarparts ECP part number 436110070

Tools needed

Flat Screwdriver
Socket set

The M52 ICV is located on the right hand side of the engine (Looking from the front) underneath the inlet manifold and is fixed by a rubber flange/bracket.

The silver body of the ICV can be seen to the right of the throttle body as is connected to the dipstick bracket. The ICV has one main electric plug at the rear, a vacuum hose at the bottom which goes to the bottom of the rubber bellows and the ICV is fitted to the underneath of inlet manifold by a rubber grommet which acts as a seal and fits inside a circular socket.

Procedure for replacement.

1. Disconnect the battery Negative. (Just for safety)

2. For better access remove the oil filter cover and cover the chamber with a plastic bag just in case you drop something down there.

3. Remove the three bolts holding the ICV and dipstick in place.

4. Disconnect the large rubber vacuum hose from the bottom of the main rubber throttle Hose (Bellows).

5. Pull down on the ICV to free from the inlet manifold.

The whole ICV will then pull through passed the dipstick. Be careful of cables and vacuum hose.

6. With the ICV part way out disconnect the plug from the rear and the ICV
Will then pull free from the car.

7. Lay the new and old ICV’s down together at transfer the hose and rubber grommet to match.

New one ready to go

8. Although removal is easier via the side, re fitting is easier via the front of the engine, under the inlet manifold.

Aligning the new ICV can be difficult as your working blind but take your time to insure it sits in the correct place and that you don’t accidentally
dislodge a vacuum hose. Be sure to pull through the large ICV hose.

9. With the ICV in roughly the right position re connect the electric plug,
Reconnect the lower vacuum hose to the bellows and push the ICV up
into the inlet manifold.

10. Replace the fixing bolts and dipstick bracket.

NB: Have a feel down inside the inlet manifold to ensure you haven’t
dislodged any vacuum hoses.

11. Replace the oil filter cover.

12. Reconnect the Battery.

13. Fire her up.

I meant take apart the junk in the engine to get to it. For the M50 you have to take out the airbox and move around several hoses to get to it, thus "take apart."

The M50 ICV is buried in the depths of the engine, Pirate. Took me a few minutes to find it as well.
