i was giving way to cars at an intersection when the inside lane was clear but the outside lane was choockers, so took off normally (no i didnt drop the clutch, i dont thrash my baby) then i just put my foot abit further than half way and the thing just launched and at the 3,500 rpm i changed it into second and pushed it even more. Then i slowed down because the outside lane was full and i had to let them goo to change lane to turn into another street on the right (remember im in australia).
The funny thing is that my dad didnt tell me off:rofl:

I love that feeling of being pushed back into the seat.

Yeah,i do this every once in while, bounce my m52 off the limiter, going up hills on long trip to mum and dads joint,I figure it can't hurt it to blow the cob webs out of her,end up doing like 130 going up hills.

before you think i trash it,i don't,this might happen once ever six months or so,normally i dont go any were near the electronic limiter.

My grandfather, a normally quiet, conservative man, had a mid 1970s Plymouth Fury with a 383 engine. Twice a year he'd take it out and run the hell out of it for a few minutes, just to, as he put it, "blow the carbon out of it."

Some of my fondest memories of my grandfather are the times he'd say, "Want to go for a quick ride with me?"

I must admit, I don't wait for anybody on the road. If some dickwods are in the wrong lane I'll use the lane they should be in

That generally doesn't happen unless you take your eye off the ball or do something crazy. You have to watch everyone else like a hawk because even if you don't do anything wrong, they can! After a while, you probably won't worry about that you'll just use your car  :p

I just dont want to thrash it. I like the way it drives and i plan on keeping it smooth and perfect the way it is now:thumbup:

Ill take it to 5,000rpm max, anymore is pushing my luck

Sometimes I drive mine smoothly, sometimes I thrash it. I figure as long as it doesn't blow up, I should use it fully until I get a much better BMW. I take it to 4750 when I need to, but generally don't go higher than 3500 or 4000 for normal driving (it does need pushing most of the time). Using high revs causes a burning smell to enter the cockpit, not sure what that is, maybe oil or something, so I do hold back a bit.

Haha yeah! Spark plug condition was perfect though, so maybe it is something to do with something getting hot or something spilling onto something hot, or something being forced into the cylinders round the piston rings at the high compression and burning. Not sure I need to know  maybe it's exhaust fumes even

But the engine generally seems to be okay for 218000 kms

You loosing oil at all?

I push my bimmer all the time all the time. you can do this perfectly safely by staying low in the gears and nailing the accelerator

My problem is that my babdy is SOOOOO amazing above 3500k that i sit there at 4k and just wait until there is nothing ahead of me and nail it. Once i have pulled my head out of the headrest, i have to let off as the adrenaline pumping though my body is amazing!!

Just ask mum how fast she is!

Got my clutch replaced yesterday so will take her out for a spin at the weekend and let you know how she feels.

AWSOME!
but when i pushed my 318is pete, i could feel that pull back sensation. My head was glued to the headrest. The 318is is quick off the line.
0-50km in 3
0-80km in 6-7
Tut Tut. Power when i need it.

But i dont like the idea of pinging my m44

there's nothing wrong with it ,that's why cars are fitted with electronic limiter,to stop the motor from blowing up,that ping sound is the limiter cutting in,the motor wants to go harder but the limiter wont let it,i dont drive on the limiter all the time, jsut once in blue moon, most of my revs are between 1500 to 2500,no need to go any higher when you have an m5 i6 under the hood.

DominguesE30
05-04-2007, 04:48 AM
still, i dont like the idea.
I see it as if im running. I can walk, jog or sprint. If i keep pushing myself there will be a point where i will stack it and fall.

Nope, doesn't seem to lose oil. None under where I park, and only a little old oil on the side of the engine block.

The problem is that I don't get any true power unless I boot it at 3,500 and above. But I guess I could use more accelerator and keep the revs lower for general driving like you say

Nice one on the clutch, let us know how it feels !

Ok that will be good mate, look forward to it!

And Dom, make sure that once you've got your provisional license and dumped the plates, that you do enjoy your car's power (more than mine and I enjoy mine enough!). Don't end up never pushing it hard enough before you get a new car! But be safe at the same time

I gotta go to uni now, have fun!

I sincerely doubt it will manage them in stock trim buddy

Is still a great car either way :)

Agree with BMW that you should push your car, but just remember that just cos you have a licence, doesn't make you a good driver. That takes years of practice (or the use of a race circuit hehehe)

I love it when Pirate puts his foot down - the G Force expells all the wrinkles from my face and propels them onto the back seat:rofl:

That's not really true because I haven't got any wrinkles:mad:

You're aware that the 318 is so gutless that it gets worse fuel efficiency when you drive it at low RPMs, right?

It's fine with the foot barely on the accelerator at a constant road speed. Acceleration is another matter

hehe. i don't like the first gear at all (partly because it revs up too fast). but when i have to change to 3rd, i always rev up to 5000 or smth - then it packs a bigger punch :D (always means when i've got the need for speed. i do regular driving in the city normally).

I've found that I get better gas mileage anytime I keep the RPM's over 3k. Anything less and it bogs and you can see the mileage gage go down. At a constant speed like the highway, it gets great mileage anywhere in the rpm range, but for around town, I always keep it above 3k. Then again, Maybe it's cause I am always flying low!

You're kidding, right?!
I try to shift by 3k, usually under. I'll get better mileage if I shift around 4k or so you say, and keep the revs up in the top of the powerband? Weird....my old car's mileage TANKED when I got up high. Hmmm....

Aren't you worried about the wear and tear of regularly running it that high?

Anywhere below 4k is fine, and to go once in a while is a good thing mate!!

If you wanted to drive around at 3-4k all the time, nothing bad would happen :)

At the moment a section the M60 of the motorway in Manchester UK is down to 40MPH due to roadworks, but as soon as I see the restriction end I drop it to third and floor it up to 4000++, it's immensely satisfying to hear and feel and i only drive a crapp ol' 318!!! :)....

140k on the clock, and I've done well over 35k driving like this and the engine is smooth as ever. It just begs to be pushed!

Pirate_copy
05-05-2007, 01:48 PM
Know exactly what you mean mate

They just got rid of a load of roadworks on the M5, but then they were there, i would sit in the outside lane doing 3k rpm in second and as soon as i was level with the "END" sign i nailed it and all the being stuck traffic was worth it :D:D:D:D

Driving a BMW is sheer Nirvana

Ps, the 318i is an brilliant car!
