clutch cylinders

does anyone know how to test the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder to see if they are working properly? i want to check to make sure they arnt the cause of my clutch going bad before i put a new one in.

the Bentley manual does not give any specifics on how to test the cylinders, however it does say that a spongy pedal, excessive free travel, and grinding while shifting all indicate problems with the clutch hydraulics. Furthermore, it says it is best to start with a fluid flush before replacing ANY of the hydraulics or clutch.
