A 4-door 5-series sedan and a 3-series convertible are totally different cars. Make up your mind what you want first. You're comparing apples and oranges based on price alone.

If you're deciding between a 528 and a 535, you should decide what your priorities are: cost, performance, gas mileage, turbo vs non-turbo, maintenance, etc. All things being equal, the 535 pricing you have is (to me) not that much more than a 528. But $3500 may be over your spending limit, in which case there should be no issue. If the money and decreased gas mileage is not important to you, but performance is, get the 535. If you're looking for a comfortable car that gets better gas mileage, and costs less, get the 528.

the 528 and 328 are the small motor cars and may get a little more mpg but not much. the conv with sport is the heavest in weight [less mpg] and the hardest ride of the 3. 3 series use stiff tuning in the SP option. the 5 series use hydralics on the anti roll. i've had both and the 5 preform on the corners better than the 3 and the cruise is smooth not harsh.

i would go for the 535. with 300hp its a good preforming car and it has the sport package. if you coming back to the states where you'll see stop and go traffic you should add the active cruise. i have the previous generation and it great in stop and go traffic but the new system is far better. i would also drop the nav to pay for the curise and use part for a good garmin after market nav.

About the Conv.

Ask yourself, Are you a Conv. person??

Do you really like the sun beating down on you. Will you put the top down all the time or only a couple times a year ?

I agree--apples and oranges..the 5 series are luxury sport sedans, the 3 vert is more of a toy--what do you want?
