Earlier this week I finally picked up my dream vehicle after ordering it almost 2 months ago. The wait was well worth it. I will take more photos soon, but I feel kind of weird taking photos of my vehicle in my work parking lot. I took a couple quick ones below (man I have to watch out for those parking curbs!).

08 550i Sport
Space Gray Exterior / Black Interior
Sport Package

Steptronic Auto

I checked all of the dealers in my SOCAL area and could only get $1K off MSRP. I recently had a 2001 530i, 2006 530xi and my brother has a 2004 545i, so we love our 5 series, but this is by far the best one I have ever owned and had the pleasure of driving. This is a truly the best mid-size sports sedan out there.

This vehicle is amazing. Any questions feel free to ask.

Great looking car! Congrats!

I remember when you got the 2006 530xi, which was around the same time I got mine and now I see you too have upgraded (although you more than me) but still being in the Northeast I went 535xi.

I had that color (or what was pretty similar on my 530) my new one should be in next weekend (its at the port) and I can't wait. Good luck and post more pictures.

I am originally from NJ, so when I recently relocated to CA, I left the 06 530xi with a family member and the sole reason I got it was to get through the winter snow months. BMW Sport Packages and Snow don't go well together and I am one of the lazy ones that doesn't want to spend the time to swtich out rims and tires every winter season.

Now that I am in S.CA, it doesn't snow here and hardly even rains, so it's perfect for the RWD 550i Sport all year round. I love it here.

Congrats to you on your upcoming delivery, the wait is always tough and I seemed to be checking the status almost everyday from the beginning.

Welcome back to the Sport Package!

I know how you feel and mine is a 2004 545i, still feel the same about it today.

Before and even now since I have picked up my 08 550i, the 8 Cylinder 5 Series Engines are works of art. I loved the 545i and still do, that is why I went with a 550i, instead of the 535i. There is something so special and incredible about the BMW 8 cylinder engine.

I can't remember if Park Distance Control (PDC) came standard with the 550i or with one of the packages I bought. It's works fine, but it still can not guard against front curb rash, since for some reason that object maybe too low? It didn't even come on or warn me when I parked like that in the photo.

OK will work on it. It's a beautiful interior and has some nice new touches. I drive finally has 6 buttons to choose from and I don't know if this is new or not, but you can do voice commands when entering a Navigation address. I haven't tried it yet, but my BMW salesperson told me about this.

I usually change cars every 3-4 years, but this one maybe a longer keeper. I was just going to follow the regular maintenance schedule, but if it's highly recommended to change the fluids before then, then it doesn't hurt. Keep me updated on what you decide to do.

Don't be envious, I too once had a 06 530xi because I was in NJ and I loved that vehicle too. Since moving to CA I no longer needed AWD so I went for my dream car (550i).

Your time will come, but the 535xi with that new 6 Turbo is a huge step above the previous 530i and definitely shortens the gap between the 535 and 550i. You can't go wrong with a 535!

Overall, I'm a big fan of the new 550i with Sport Pkg. I didn't really like the new 5 design when it first emerged a few years ago but it is starting to grow on me and I guess the minor tweaking of the '08 model plus the additional surfaces of the Sport Pkg. have really helped in the appearance department. I still can't decide if I love or hate those wheels though. The spokes take such a strange deep angle from the center when you view it in person and up close it is just a little weird. Guess I'm picky. Would love to see more pictures though, especially different colors....like black!

I will be very interested to see what folks have to say about keeping them clean. I am betting that they are going to be more trouble than they are worth. I am considering 166 wheels but my 124s are so easy to clean that I may just stay with them.

The 08 Sport 550i rims look even better in person (I too was skeptical in the beginning).

I am more of a fan of the Deep Dish Rims that were on E39 Sport Packages, but these 19's with low profile tires are still stunning yet classy and still indicates the difference between an 08 550i and all the rest of the 5 series out there.

Silver is beautiful and just goes well with any BMW vehicle. I think BMW's probably look the best in silver, where Mercedes look better in Black. I opted for the Space Gray since it's slightly different and a compromise between silver and black (which I love both colors). Remember this new 08 Space Gray Color is slightly darker than the previouis Silver-Gray color, so it seems like a richer tone. I like it.

It is an odd color - not really black at all. In some light it can look like a very dark purple - metallic eggplant maybe. I have never seen it look as blue as in those photos, but I reckon with the right light it can. Kind of nice in a way, but up close and personal, it looks too funky for my conservative taste - at least on the M3s I have seen.

I assume the Carbon Black will look even better in person. As for the Deep Sea Blue, I would love to see one of those in person, since all the early 08 5 series marketing info was a Computer Generated graphic in Deep Sea Blue. Looks great online, but I am curious how it looks in person. Flashy?

I don't think BMW has a wheel that is easy to keep clean. I see three categories:

1) Difficult to clean.
2) Imposssible clean.
3) Impossible to clean *and* to not bash you knuckes into a bloody mess.

I like this deep sea blue color, it's different, but I would probably get used to it. I just never owned a blue car before, so to me this looks cool yet flashy in Deep Sea Blue.

beautiful car man, enjoy it.

Thanks again, I miss my E39 530i a little (another great vehicle), but this new vehicle makes me soon forget about the old.

Your turn next to upgrade!

Between platinum bronze, platinum grey, and deep sea blue, I decided to go with the blue. I had only seen a few pictures of it, but that color is really nice. My car should enter production in two weeks, and now I just have to wait until July before I see it in person, and drive it around the autobahn.

The reflectors on the side front bumper are simply criminal. I assume this is new Fed Regs but for me they stick out like a soar thumb and detract from what is otherwise a beautiful car.

My08535i

They do stick out, and they are not pretty at all, but since they removed the orange lens out of the headlight, they have to put it somewhere, so the new trend on all the BMW's in the bumper.

I don't think BMW has a wheel that is easy to keep clean. I see three categories:

1) Difficult to clean.
2) Imposssible clean.
3) Impossible to clean *and* to not bash you knuckes into a bloody mess.

All this talk and worrying about cleaning wheels. :tsk:

Just put on some Axxis Deluxe Plus pads. I have had them on my 330 for the last 4 years and my car looks dirty long before my wheels do... and I have a silver car.

The rear shot shows you how aggressive this Aero Kit makes the 5 series look, as well in conjunction with the front and side spoilers.

The brochure shows a rear spoiler with the sport package? Did you have them leave it off, or is that another option?

It's a $400 plus or minus option on the M-aero spoiler...

I saw that brochure too and it must be a typing error since it also notes a rear spoiler, but the 08 550i Sports do NOT come with a rear spoiler (which I prefer), so it's an option that you have to get from your dealer.

A customers orders 08 Space Gray M5 came in today, they pulled it in the shop before I could take pics, but I will get em soon. It was absolutely Sexy!! But it gave me an idea of how my 535 will look (same color).

And I got bad news today from the BMW Port, they are currently not yet installing Aero kits on any 08 5's. The 550i comes with it from Germany, but the rest get em installed at the port, and they said so far they are not putting them on yet. If I would have know that, I woulda got a 550.

My dealer told me that mine will go into production in June and I will have it by August 1st. So does that mean it will have paddles and a sport button with Steptronic? My 2004 645Ci, which is Steptronic, has the sport button, but no paddles. If this is true, what comes with the sport transmission for $500?

I believe the only way to gets paddles and the sport button is to get the sport automatic transmission (available only on the 535i and 550i). If you don't splurge for the $500, you do not get the paddles.

But then again no one has a June production car yet...

Yes you are correct- Paddles and Sport Button only come with Option- SPORT Auto Transmission $500.

If you get regular steptronic- no paddles, no button.

I thought my sales person was good. I asked her about the '08 550.

Can the sport automatic be ordered yet?
.. Never heard about that.
It supoosedly has paddles and a sport button.
.. No, only on M5.
Its on the bmwusa website SOP June '07.
.. They are often wrong.
What do you know about the anthracite headliner?
.. It comes with a gray headliner.
I thought it was a priority 1 option.
.. There aren't any I know of on the 550i.
So no other priority 1 options?
..No

The good news is they have a loaded '08 Space gray 550i with sport package I can drive but the first opportunity between our schedules is Thursday so stay tuned.

Old Federal regs, in effect since 1968. Cars in the US must have amber reflectors on the front.

The separate reflector is an improvement over other BMW designs, which had a reflector incorporated into a NA-specific front light assembly. If you didn't like it, you had to replace it with a very expensive Euro assembly.

If you don't like these, you can replace them with inexpensive body-colored panels.

My sales person redeemed herself a bit. The sport auto with paddles can now be ordered. Anthracite headliner is a priority 1 option for customer order only. As is perf'd leather.

But we already knew all of that thanks to the Bimmerfest community. :)

My08535, one question: How does the perf'd leather compare to the standard Dakota leather? Is it perf'd Dakota leather? Is it the same Merino leather as in the m5? I prefer a soft high quality leather like the Nappa Heritage leather in the E39 M5.

Reminder to all your 2008 BMW owners.

I finally took mine to a car wash today and made a point to explain to the car wash people the function of the new 08 Electronic / Steptronic Gear Shifter. I was really worried beforehand that they wouldn't know what to do and either mess it up or drive my vehicle into a wall by mistake.

However the problem is you show the first guy that drives it into the car wash and then the 2nd guy that drives it out of the car wash is different so I saw he had some issues getting the vehicle to move forward, but he eventually got it as I was about to hop over the wall to show him what to do.

Eventually we made it out alive!

PS - I wonder if you have the door locks on autolock when you drive the car, will they autolock in the car wash by mistake and you get locked out of your car?

I am sure it's not too hard to get used to the new shifter on the 08. I've taken my car to valet a few times and (maybe luckily) out of the four times i've went, they drove off in no time. Just remember to give them the valet key :p

And car washes, you should be doing that yourself :)

Good point, funny thing here in SOCAL near the shore, the association will not let you wash your own car in the driveway to due to the run off into the drains leading to the ocean. They won't even allow a mobile detailer to wash your vehicle. What to do?

jcflys
06-21-2007, 09:03 AM
Do it anyway! It is easier to ask for forgivness than permission. There are also several good waterless wash products on the market that would allow you to wash yourself.

This one is heavily recommended on autopia.org
