I bought the inV1si mirror, the rearview mirror with the V1 remote display integrated into it.

For HACK and the other guys who've swapped mirrors, what's the best way to remove the old mirror, just give it a whack?

What glue did you use to bond the new one? Does BMW sell it's own?

Thanks,
Haus

To remove the mirror, you have to remove the two plastic pieces that form the base of the mirror (the thing that gets attached to the window). That should expose some wires and the metal core of the base/arm that holds the mirror on the windshield.

Rotate that arm 60 degrees clockwise and the mirror should seperate from the base of the windshield. It will require SIGNIFICANT force, almost as hard as you would yank out a shift knob, but it comes off and can be re-installed without glue.

The mirror itself is actually attached to the base of the winshield via a squar piece that gets glued onto the winshield (not removable), and that piece has a protrusion and the mirror attaches to that base via a circlip type device that releases on a 1/3 turn.

Find a good shot of a interior mirror that shows the arm and the mirror and I can illustrate to you better.

Thanks HACK,
I was looking at the Diagram in the ETK but it wasn't clear. I think I can get it from your discription.

Did ya get my check yet?

Um, I hope the E36 mirror comes off the same way as the E46. You don't wanna be holding a piece of the windshield when you're done.

I checked the ETK and it looks like it comes off the same way. Thanks for the warning.

See the attached gif. E46 mirror base differs slightly but the basic principle apply.

I know this was an old thread, but my E46 M3 My04 mirror came off VERY easily.

I'm thinking of swapping my rear view mirror for the auto dimming ones. I couldn't buy it separately from the premium package. Does anyone have instructions on removing the existing mirror and installing a new one for 325XI 2006? Thanks!

I've done this on my E46, very easy. I'm not sure if the pin-out for the connector in the E90 is the same though. For some strange reason, BMW does not put all the necessary wiring in place if you don't order the mirror from the factory. I'm not sure if this is true for the E90 too, but it is seriously annoying if they continued this tradition. Otherwise, it would be plug-n-play in about 2 minutes.

For the E46 you need to have a switched +12v contact in pin 3 of the connector, a ground in pin 10. My car had the ground, but not the +12v, so I ran a wire from my V1 install to that contact in the connector.

Maybe you can double check the part number on the mirror you want against an E46 mirror part number with auto-dim, if they are the same, then the wiring diagram is the same too.
