I just traded in my 2001 E39 M5 {19,600 miles}
on a 2008 550i Sport {Standard 6 speed Automatic}
loaded with most options...

I smashed and shattered my right elbow a while back
and ever since I've had an awful time shifting the 6 speed stick M5 ..
Also didn't want the SMG that's on the new M5..

I've only had the 550i for about a week so I can't
give you guys much of a comparison between it and my Old Beasty M5 friend....

Car is not broken in yet, therefore I haven't floored it for a seat of the pants test run..
Will let everyone know my opinion of the performance after some good hot runs...

Any mods. suggestions? Chip, Exhaust system, Etc.

All the best, :thumbup: :thumbup:

Sorry to hear of your elbow, hope you recover from that!

I gotta ask... since I'm still debating between an E39 M5 and an E60, what kind of money did you get on trade for your M5? Did you have much trouble with it? A low mileage 2001 would have been right up my alley... dammit!

Thanks! Oh - and congrats on the new ride!

Did you buy the M5 new? Those are some low miles. Must have been in brand new condition! Good luck with your new ride.

I would have thought you could have sold the M5 for about 40,000 in that condition. Sounds like a #1 mint condition car. I had a mint condition vette that the dealer tried to low ball me on, and I ended up selling it for 25% more to the first person who came out to look at it. Good luck on the 550. That is a nice ride too!

It will be painful for a while - not the elbow, the loss of the M5. I did that last year with a low mileage e39 '02 M5. It may turn out to be one of the best cars BMW has ever made - at least for the near term. It sure as heck held value like nothing else - with 25K miles on it, I sold it with only one showing for $47K. It just wasn't practical for me, but certainly the best car I have ever owned in terms of power and driving enjoyment...and reliability - it was pure machine.

I really like a lot of things about the 550i, but...well there's a reason they call the M5 the Beast and the e39 was the Ultimate Beast.

I had a 03 LMB/caramel with a few mods and absolutely loved the car. I sold it with 29k on the clock. I also agree, this is one of the best cars made. My biggest fear was selling/owning that car w/o any factory warranty. It is a great sales feature and can be an ownership nightmare. The cars really are quite similar. I can offer the following:

E39 M5
Power and handling is a bit better
Better looking exterior design/outdated interior
Sound was much better (had ss xpipe and kelleners cans)
SSK in both, shifter about the same

550i
550i technology is better (hopefully will hold up w/o issues)
Logic 7 stereo much better than M Audio
Seats much better
Warranty

There are many times when I wish I had the E39 back, but the 550i is a great substitute.

Good luck with your new 550i and sorry for your ailment. In my opinion, a manual is much more engaging and fun to drive, even at my age :) I bet you miss it.
