My '03 M3 Convt. SMG with 21k mi. warranty is up at the end of the month (next week). I am not the original owner so the BMW dealer tells me they cannot sell me an extended warranty (I am getting the extended maintenance).
I'm concerned about the SMG and want to get an extended warranty (no problems with it, just concerned with repair costs). Threads go round & round on whether to get an ext. warr., but I'm pretty set on getting one. Complaints are rampant on pretty much every ext. warranty company out there. Does anyone have any *good* experience with an ext. warranty company?
Thanks for any recommendations.
Don

There is no such thing as a good third party extended warranty. You will be the picking the best of the bad.

Not always so that all aftermarket warranties are bad. While many are bad, and it requires a lot of research to find one that is financially sound, there may be some good ones. I've had two used bmws with different branded "aftermarket" warranties and in both cases I never had problems with the coverage. I bought the cars used with the warranties already on them, so I had no choice in the matter. But in both cases the savings in repair costs was well over $1,000 in the relatively short periods I owned them. My mechanic just called it in and they covered the repairs. I'm sure there are situations where breakdowns "fall between the cracks" of these named coverage policies, though. I had a $1200 set of catalytic converters replaced on a 540 for free, some radiator work, an engine failing to start problem, windows, a sunroof, and a few other minor electrical gremlins fixed with no hassles.

I'm researching an original owner's protection bmw backed warranty for my e90. I would say it's well worth the added cost if available. But not everyone can qualify.
