Those ducts are supposed to be the brake ducts. Putting something in there or blocking them isn't such a great idea.
Go to RealOEM.com and find the brake duct hoses, order them and give your brakes...
well...
...a break.

Really??
Are they not a bit close to the centre to be for the brake ducts buddy?

no there perfect, look on your 328 the brake ducts are supposed to be just inside the plastic grill beside your foglights, the exact same location as these gaps on the M3 bumper.

cool!
I stand corrected

hehe exactly cool, you gotta keep them brakes cool, so i wouldn't block it, go get them brake duckts i noticed a huge decrease in brake dust when i did!!!

Forget the dust issue, the LAST thing you want is brake fade and warped rotors!!

those square holes you guys say are for brake ducts. so why arnt they on the standard e36 91 model bar? cause that is what was on there before .this is the same car http://image2.frappr.com/pix2/i/20070411/6/d/1/6d19bcdae846d7a1e6b572487784b49a0_large.jpg there is no ducting behind this bar .cheers

You are SUPPOSED to have brake ducts!!!!!!!

They are item #10 in the diagram on this page. They go from the front bumper to the inner wheel well and basically blow air all around inside the wheel arch, not directly on the brakes.

That is all fine - but what are 'Brake Duct Hoses'. I did find the relevant REALOEM page and located the brake ducts but not these 'hoses'??

they are just the brake ducts, i guess who ever posted the hoses part thought they resembled hoses which they kind of do and was trying to make a better visualization for you.

COOL! That makes sense. I thought from the description there were some sort of hoses that run from the end of the duct to direct the cool air flow closer to the disks and pads.

Yup. Thanks for the translation.
It's kinda funny how many people don't realise they have them. Take a look under the hood and you'll see it if you look hard enough. If you tool around enough, you'll see them when you raise the car to do suspension work and the like.

nope its just those ducts, however be careful once you start to get into this area, you'll find that most of our cars which are 10+ years old are missing ALOT of this plastic work up front and you'll probably end up spending 400 dollars or more on them little pieces

$400? Damn you got raped! I replaced almost all the plastics up front.. Both vertical panels on the sides of the radiator, the splash shield, the porkchops, both brake ducts and even the small seals cause I have A/C. Only cost me $120!
There ARE a few companies that do make brake duct hoses and new backing plates to better cool the brakes. IMO not worth it unless you are seriously tracking the car.

BTW, this thread title sounds more like a personal problem than a car problem....

The brake ducts are more obvious on the older model and previous gen 3s. A guy I work with has an E30 and it's quite obvious.
Here's a pic I found of one (what-the-ugly hood extension??):

The ports inside of the fogs are the brake ducts.

If you dont have the ducts it is not going to cause any issues. You arent braking that hard enough to cause your brakes to get over heated. THe only time they are needed is if you are doing any type of tracking or racing. If you look at other car manufactures they dont have them. Man i ran over a year without them and my brakes are good as new and i am not that easy on them. You are still getting plenty of air from underneath and from the sides of the car.

+1
They don't even blow on the brakes anyway! they just kind of add extra air around in the wheel openings.
