Alright after bashing a guy about settling for an auto M3 for his wife to drive i have an confession to make. I settled for an auto when i bought my car for a similar reason. I have had enough of this stupid manumatic crap, i miss me clutch. Im going to be shopping for a new tranny soon and i just wanted to discuss the posibility of getting a 6 speed. What are your experiences, anyone got some good links or companies to help, its not a matter of if it can be done, i know it can, the important question is How much $ and how much Time.

For resale value, i doubt anyone will want to buy a car with an aftermarket transmission. That being said, it's very doable. There are a lot of resources on these boards in past postings.

187,500 miles in just 10 years? Wow someone has driven your car hard! Just out of interest, how is your engine? Is it still pretty smooth?

oh yea she's smooth ill probably do a rebuild in a couple of months, the reason im not just selling and buying stick is because i've fallen in love with this car not the E36 but THIS car, its a real jem works like it just came off the lot save for the occasional exploding fan which is my own fault. it was commuter driven bout 200km a day

Swapping to a 6 speed tranny is gonna cost you betweend $3-5K depending on what company you go with and a lot of time. Your better off selling your car and buying a different one with a 5sp and calling it a day. Same goes for a manual conversion. Unless your getting all the parts VERY cheap, don't bother as it is not cost effective in any stretch.

What kind of stuff do you do in a rebuild? Is it stuff like new valves?

What about an M3 box, it has the same gear ratios of course. It would be best to put in the 328i final drive manual diff though which is a 2.93:1 ratio. At the end of it all you would have the same setup as a 5 speed manual 328i, but an overdrive gear for relaxed high speed cruising.

If you want some more info on US spec gearboxes and diffs look here. It's for the E46 but that is basically the same as the E36 and it should give you a good idea of things.

Having looked into the issue, I have concluded from my research that indeed, the fan was designed by Chris Bangle, the devil incarnate. Being satan, he was able to relay the blueprints for the fan design back through time to the late 80s when the E36 was being designed, and thus the clutch fan was born and the E36 became "bangled" - not in terms of its aesthetic look, but rather its fan system.

excellent research, however if you have ever seen the effects of the fan explosion first hand no research is required to discover this.

I have a 6spd in my E46, and I wouldn't bother spending any extra cash on a 6spd over a 5spd. Just make sure you put a 2.93:1 in the back (which should be easy to find cheap or even free) and then the 5spd is fine.
