Hi all,

Just wondering if BMW installed oil coolers on the 535i. It's become a bit of a debacle on the 335i; to summarize (for cars shipped to the US):

- 335s without the sport package DO NOT come with oil coolers
- 335s with sport and steptronic transmission only come with oil coolers if the car was built during or after 3/2007
- 335s with sport and manual transmission DO come with the oil cooler
- If you don't have the oil cooler, the odds that the oil temp will hit 300F and the car will go into limp mode when driven on a racetrack seem to be almost as sure of a thing as death and taxes

I'm attaching a couple pictures for reference; The first one shows a 335i engine *without* the oil cooler; the second one shows *with*.

I just read your post and went out and looked under the hood of my new 535i. Yes there is an oil cooler. The oil cooler hose is a bit shorter and runs almost straight across the the radiator but it looks like the same oil filter housing in the picture you posted depicting a 335i with oil cooler. My car is has sport package with auto trans. I'm not sure I will be doing any tracking but its good to know my oil will be cooler especially during the long Texas summers.

See this message string, especially Post 8 showing pictures of the oil cooler on a 535.

Cool, thanks for posting! I tried searching for "oil cooler" before I posted that but the search function appeared broken.. honest :)

Could someone who has recently acquired a non-sports 535i please check to see if it comes with an oil cooler? Thanks!

Does anyone know if the 328i with Sports Package has an oil cooler?

I would also like to know if the non-sports 535i comes with an oil cooler. Anyone know?

I had an opportunity today to see under the hood of a non-sports 535i (manufacture date March '07). It appears to have the oil cooler. That is, it had the same dual hoses running to the oil filter assembly as exists in a current sport-535i (which I also viewed today for comparison). Presumably, these hoses are functional and are not decoration added in order to console worried customers who are reading the internet. (Am I becoming too cynical?)

Interestingly, I received the following response today from Customer Relations at ProductQuestions@BMWUSA (after asking them whether all 535i come with an oil cooler):

I have checked with my 5 Series specialists and they have confirmed that the oil cooler is not needed, nor is it included, in the 5 Series. I hope this information is helpful.

I have a 535Xi that was ordered 26 May, and picked up 2 July. I checked under the hood tonight, and using the pictures in the first post as a guide, it looks like my car does have an oil cooler.

Thanks
