View Full Version : E39 540-6 or M3?

I'm not in the market for a new car, and as much as I like the new M3, I really need 4 doors. The M5 is out of the question (price range), but I was wondering what those of you who've driven (or better yet, own) the M3 and 540-6 think of the two in terms of a head-to-head comparison. Not so much the objective stuff (I can get that off the web myself), but more subjective impressions (as I doubt I'll drive either one anytime soon).

Thx,

I test drove a 530i a while ago (step) I must say I was very impressed with the ride comfort. There's more space compared to 3series and it drives very smooth. My lease is ending in 2002 (March) so I may consider to go with 5 Series. But the down side is the new 5 Series will be hitting the streets at the end of 2002. So I think I'll lease another 3 Series for one year (I know the monthly rate will be higher than of a 36months lease) and swap it for a 5 Series some time in 2003.

I guess you're lucky not all of us are bitter and quick to call other people names...

Remember what you replied to a similar post of mine on .ORG? All because I wanted opinions on X5 x M3... Anyway, it's not like I gave a $h!t to your reply at the time...

Good luck on your decision (of course, after you find a solution for every single problem in today's world).

To him, you're nothing but a knucklehead when you can't decide between two BMW's...

Meant to type that apparently, he felt strongly about my post at the time because given all the bad stuff that's happened to us lately, we shouldn't waste one minute of our lives with silly questions like: X5 x M3, 540-6speed x M3. We should feel bad at all times.

That's why a question like that coming from him is beyond me...

I've been wondering the same thing. Think I asked it on another post today.

I would imagine the M3 to be much more nimble. But, that's not the only reason why I would buy either one. The 5 series has some serious appeal for me. Mostly because of it's size and for use as a family or business sedan. As it is, I got the 330i for it's "sedan" features. Definitely easier to get the baby in the back than a coupe, but not roomy enough to really haul around a family.

I'm getting awfully sick of driving the minivan on family outings. Even the wife asked me if it was hard to adjust shifting from the 330i to the van on the way home from the movies. I guess she was getting a little nauseous from my driving. :D

My solution: Buy a Toyota Matrix XRS. Now THERE'S a fun mini-minivan!

it was an innocent question and your response certainly seems inappropriate at best.

Now if I had a bad day when you posted something similar on the other board because I lost friends in the tragedy and jumped down your back, I apologize (I really don't recall).

'Nuff said.

I think you should get the 540-6 speed. In my opinion the current e39 is one of the most beautiful cars that BMW ever built. It's simple yet it's so beautiful. Are you sure you want to get one of the 5ers if it's a Chris Bangle design?

That thing is butt ugly! Speedo goes to 160mph? Hmm... looks can be deceiving. :)

I like the idea of having a V8 in a car. I like all of that torque
