The mpg gauge is vaccum gauge.
Im guessing you disconnected something on the intake manifold during your sparks change.

The mpg gauge is vaccum gauge. Why do people keep claiming that? When is the last time anyone saw a vacuum hose running to the instrument cluster of a BMW?
The gauge is electric/electronic and calculates a fuel consumption rate from the road speed ('tach'), engine speed ('td') and fuel injection time ('ti') signals. The latter two are supplied by the DDE (diesel motor electronics) which might suggest some things to check.
