ugliest bmw i've ever seen. chris bangle is the head of design for all bmw brands and adrian van hooydonk is the chief of design for bmw, and they say the board ultimately set the "futuristic" design direction and approved all new bmw designs... but it really blows me away how they could mess things up so completely (looks-wise) one after another.

I disagree. I believe that it is a good design to get into the compact performance car market. Remember that this car in some ways is to reflect the old 2002, which some people didn't like. But, that car did great and has a big following. There are some things like the headlights and grill that I think should be worked on more. For some reason though, its beefy proportions have a certain attractive-ness. I find that buying a brand new BMW for under or around 30K is something that people just can't pass up. I know I sure can't. You do have merit in your coments and are free to your opinions. Whatever floats your boat.

I personally like the design. It has to be the cleanest Bangle design period. It looks close to the 90's model 3 series. The flame surfacing was kept to a minimum and the more upright stance is classic BMW. I don't really see how this design is "futuristic" at all.

If anything it looks like a cross between a E30 and E36.

I also like the design. In fact the info and spy pics of the 135 in a few of the car mags made me sign up on this board and take a look around. I may end up getting a 335 Coupe, but I'm still undecided at this point.

E60 driver criticizing the appearance of another model? Now that's amusing.

I think its a love it or hate type of design. I think more people will like it..and I think a few people will hate it. I hate Scions and any type of square vehicle. Its not only because of stying, I think it's a hazard for other drivers to be driving next to a square vehicle where the driver has limited visibility and an even bigger blind spot due to poor design that he/she thought was stylish.

E60 and e90 along with the most of the rest of the BMW line up looks really good to me. I***8217;d have to say the e60 is the one of the best looking sedans on the market currently. Just goes to show you how subjective aesthetics really are.

Looks are subjective, but I think that both the sedan and coupe suffer from the fact that the original design was a hatchback. It was bastardized to create coupe and sedan versions. In my opinion, the hatch is a great looking car. The coupe, sedan and vert, not so much.

the coupe, IMO, looks worse than the hatch - it looks like a kia from behind...

The E60 is, hands-down, the ugliest BMW in my lifetime. And I'm in my 30s.

FWIW, the 6 series is just a Camry Solara on steroids. Hideous car. Easily the worst looking car in the BMW lineup with the e92 running a not-so-distant second.

But that's obviously not saying much.

bangle's philosophy is that there revolutions and evolutions in car design. after a few years of evolution of a certian style there is a revolution of radically differnt designs. bangle is trying to start that revolution so it will take a few years to get use to.

I actually think E60 looks the best of all bangle bimmers--the tailights could use some work though.

E90: pretty good except its butt, which i really can't get over.
E92: plain ok, nothing exciting--headlights need some work.
7-series: chubby.
6-series: looks different but never gorgeous. weird but ok.
X5: good except front headlines; awesome interier.
X3: just ok.
z: similar to 6'ers. looks different but never gorgeous, weird but ok.

and then, there is 1-series, which is ugly, chubby, headlights look like eyes of deadfish. taillights remiscent of cheap dodge. ugly side lines and cuts. when i saw 1-ers in europe this spring, they looked absoulately hedious, especially in comparison to other small euro brand cars.

sidenote: almost all bimmers got great ride.

Wow, I liked the headlights on the E90 a TON better than the E92 - that's why I'll never consider the sedan...

I don't think I could even buy a car if I had 1 reservation about it... maybe that's why it took me almost 2 years to pick out a car... LOL (I'm way too picky)

The Scion xB is a style-less box. Serious lack of thought was given to the prognathous front end. However, like my two old 2002s, the boxiness makes the car airy, roomy, and free of blind spots. And it drives a little like the 2002 - smooth engine and transmission, handles like a go-cart. After an absence from BMW of twenty years, the xB has whetted my appetite for the 1-series.

Does the tC drive like that? I think people forget what a sporty light, small car feels like, they're a lot of fun. I've always enjoyed the little rental cars I get in Europe w/ great little free-revving fours.

Will have to have a closer look once it comes out in person. It looks like they carried over the dashboard from the other 1 series into the newer 1 series. No change there. I just hope the body and frame are built better then the current 5 door Hatchback.

X100000

For me, the headlights and the tailights designs scream too loud "cheapness", which at the $30,000+ bracket where they are going with regular equipment to be is not such a good idea.

BMW should have separated the front design of this 1 Series Coupe from the Hatch, the same way the 3 Series Coupe has a different design from the Sedan.

A tC owner who was interested in switching to an xB swapped cars with me for a short drive. We both liked my xB better. Lighter clutch, smoother shifter, free-revving four on a light pedal, crisp handling, flat cornering. But they don't make it any more. The new xB is a Camry wagon.
