The iPhone is fully compatible as a phone for the E60.
BMW has signed off on it. See http://www.wireless4bmw.com/info/CingularATT_iphone.pdf

Thank you so much!!! I had my hope high that it would work but now BMW has actually confirmed it. I expected it might take them a couple years to add it to their list.....:thumbup:

Nice! Now to find an extra 500 laying around
J, I think I'm returning my Wing. Piece of %^*%#@ phone :thumbdwn:
I have better things to do than play around with WM6. I can't even send email out and I had Tmo tech support and optimum tech helping and they couldn't find a solution.
I'll give it a couple more days then I'm returning it for a BB Pearl.

Give me a break. Why did you cherry-pick this posting out of all the ones on the web? That would be an extremely UNINFORMED decision. How about posting a link to David Pogue's New York Times review, or Walt Mossberg's in the Wall Street Journal. At least they have had the phone to use for a few weeks and can write a review based on experience.

Give me a break. Why did you cherry-pick this posting out of all the ones on the web? That would be an extremely UNINFORMED decision. Did I need permission to from you to post? Right, I don't. You did not read (or comprehend) my post before overreacting. I did not tell anyone what they should do with their time or money. I offered a link, of my choice, for others who were interested to consider. Some may read it and find it helpful, some may not find it helpful and others may choose not to read it at all. That is their business.
As for the article (Vindu's view) that I referenced, it does have some value. It does not have to be dispositve on the issue of buying an iPhone now or later or at all. Using the phone with AT&T/Cingular (2G technology) for a month or a year does not change that the service provider is AT&T. (In fact, the article references David Pogue's article, and quotes his criticism of AT&T's service). EDGE vs. EV-DO doesn't require hands on experience to appreciate that people accessing the internet want EV-DO (3G) technology when they can have it. (Pogue alo laments the limitations of AT&T's EDGE service). Both articles also mention that you cannot change the battery yourself. Both note that version 1 is a first version with Apple already stating that the next version will access faster networks, etc. However, Vindu's article also notes the (expected?) limitations for 3rd party applications. It also mentions that AT&T is not offering phone insurance for the iPhone.
I don't criticize people for being impetuous or trendy. Dont waste my time by criticizing me for offering information that you may not want when you make a decision. Some other people like me want to know the positives and negatives of a product or service before choosing it. And everything has some negative or thing that can be improved, even the autos that we drive.

I picked up my iPhone on Friday and I have to say it works flawlessly with my '08 528xi. The pairing went without incident and it downloaded my address book just fine. All in all, a great phone that works perfectly with a great car!! :D

Hi Chris,
Does it fit into the car's center console cell phone holder area or do you need an adaptor to allow for a nice looking BMW factory fit/finish?
Best,

I don't have the cell phone holder in the middle compartment, I just have a regular little storage compartment with a lid on it--that then lifts up to reveal a lower compartment as well. (this may be what you are talking about [upper container]). There is plenty of room (width, height and depth) for the iPhone to fit in the upper or lower compartment (at least in the '08 models).

The iPhone paired flawlessly to my 2006 525i, too. It seemed to do it almost instantly compared to the slowness with which my previous Razr seemed to pair. It's really interesting, too, that my entire contact list on my iPhone carried over whereas I never could get my Treo to do that. BTW, everyone I've shown the phone to is absolutely blown away by the thing. My old Treo seems like something from the 80's now!

i received iPhone as a gift, so i didn't experience the line. i was told it was 1.5 hrs at an at&t store in valley forge pa. no problems with connecting to at&t since i did this on saturday 6/30. connected to my 530i relatively easy once the passkey and pin were figured out.
Remember the market for the iPhone is consumers, not businesses.
the phone itself is remarkably intuitive.

I have the dealer installed iPod interface and the interface is actually sucking my battery dry. It went from a full charge to <5% in less than 12 hours. It even showed the little battery icon with the lightning bolt through it as if it was charging. :dunno:

BMWNA forwarded me to my dealer who denied that the iPhone is even compatible (never mind this I guess http://www.bmwusa.com/owners/iphone ). I responded with the link and I haven't gotten a response to that yet.

I had lots of trouble getting my iPhone to pair with my '06 525xi. Turns out it was user error. You have to have both the iPhone and the iDrive in pairing mode. The pin is whatever you want it to be. I used 0000. Once you enter that, the iDrive was ask if you want to allow the connection. Say allow and the iDrive will ask you to enter a passkey. Enter 0000 and pull the iDrive button back away from the dash to confirm the passkey (I had been pushing the button up). That should do it.
I find it interesting that BMW apparently said the iPhone would be compatible on 6/28. When I was having trouble getting mine to pair, I used the BMW Assist to ask for help on July 5 and was told that the phone wasn't supported. I guess she never got the memo.

I had an iPhone for 36 hours and returned it. 10% restocking fee. Nice. Although it works great with the car it doesn't work with Microsoft Exchange for my office making it completely worthless. My IT guys weren't willing to jeopardize the security of the network to allow the IMAP or whatever language they speak.
Back to a Blackberry.
