View Full Version : the way i'd mod my car a year ago (3ds max renders)
sure there's no point in posting this but i can't resist. Loaded a backup DVD and discovered a car I was modelling a year ago.
Back then I thought learning 3ds max would be useful (and it proved to help me a few times), so i bought a book and started with the basics, modelling stuff like beer bottles, cell phones etc (i was also making maps for counter-strike at the time, so they were lo-poly primitive models). Then I decided to take a step up and try to re-create something complex. No wonder it was a car, a bimmer, my bimmer :) to make work more fun I tried to imagine how I'd mod it. I've got a 318ti and I can't stand the ugly back of it (pls don't shoot me but it really is). Wanted to make it look okay, and then add some cool rims, a bodykit etc. So...
! Never completed, lacks front&rear lights, mirrors, wipers, other detail, interior, glass material is lame and also has some geometry glithes
! I've changed my vision of BMW modding since then. I like stock much more now. And no chrome rims please =)
tnx for taking your time and reading this, just needed to show my work to someone.

Great work! But I'm glad you didn't have the money to mod your car then! Lol.

Great renderings, but if you're looking to add mods like that, there are other cars that will look better with that 'taste'. That's a bit much for my liking...

cool stuff! :)
Phantom, lol, me too :) don't like it now. But there was time not so long ago when i liked lexus lights, so... at least i've changed my mind as i got older, while many others didn't :)
SCANDINAVIAN13 no no no, not even thinking of it anymore, i love my car for what's inside, try to keep it clean and that is. Please forgive me for what i've done
There's no 'taste' really, i just liked the wheel seen in some mag, liked the wing i found somewhere else, and of course red brembo brakes, then put put it all together on my poor compact )) followed no style. Still like the rear though.

tnx, but i don't think i'm good, if i posted these on some CG forums i'd get something like "not bad, but a completely wrong approach to A and B and C, while D and E and F simply suck, anyway keep it up dude, someday you can be like us" =) and there'd always be someone to post "dat skylinez ur fastah than dat bimmerz", "bmw sux" etc :)

nfl, i've seen some seriously good looking ti's in germany for sale, the ones that go for 6000euros and more. they have a full M-packet, and ones I liked had 17 or 18 AC Schnizter wheels. the diffuser at the back, plus projector headlights and white/red rear cluster made the car look MUCH better from the back. Give it a shot if you have the money to do it, i think it's worth it and transforms the hatchback into a very very nice looking car (IMHO).
i agree, seen many of them too... low-budget bmw porn for me =)
btw my monthly budget is as low as $275, i reckon i'm the poorest e36 owner :D and i have to repair my new apartment before september, so spark plugs, some gas, some bread and water is all i can afford =) from the economical standpoint, being a student sux for the first 2 years. I'm right in the middle.
hope to get a decent job next year though, otherwise i'd have to 3d-model a girlfriend too )))))

having an apartment beats owning any BMW any time, so dont worry. Hope you didnt take the loan recently, prices on real estate are rediculous here (if you are in tallinn). Besides, I think the BMW will take ANY money you throw at it. 200 dollars, 500 dollars, 1000 dollars per month. There are ALWAYS things you can be adding, fixing, etc, etc. Just getting a full clean up can be 200 dollars a month. :yikes::cry:
and yes. dont model your girlfriend in 3d. :D
Wow, lots of people from Estonia !
We should start a Bimmerfest Scandic/Baltic meet :)

nfl,
No need to be forgiven, mate.
As for the naysayers about your renderings, I think they look great. They're not exactly the quality that's going to make you millions, but it's well better than anything I could do in terms of 3D modeling, not to mention better than a lot of work I've seen.
I think you did a great job on it all. I'm still somewhat glad you've changed your mind though.
Welcome to the fest!

where do i get this program?
it depends on how much do you want to pay for it. A license costs about $3500. Downloading a trial and cracking it costs practically nothing. In Russia you can buy a $5 DVD with all the versions, plugins, tutorials and some porn (not to have unused disk space). At least you could a few years ago. In Estonia you may be lucky enough to have a local FTP with all kinds of illegal stuff. You could find a freeware substitute if you wanted, but I don't know any.
If you're not serious about it, don't bother. You'll definitely spend the 1st day in 'wtf?!' mode, and then a month making sh1t, but that's still exciting. Yet producing pictures like above doesn't require any extraordinary effort, or talent, all you need is a good book and lots of patience. And in the end you'll have something to show to your parents, or whoever comes up at 3 a.m., asking wtf are you doing to your computer so late.
I gave it up though, it's too demanding to be a hobby, and I'm not sure if I could find a good job even if I could produce something like that:

I have to use CAD for work, and I'll somewhat agree with you. Expensive program, not entirely worth it unless you're doing some serious work on it.
Granted, I did buy the entire Adobe suite for my own use (yes, I bought it), but I also use it a lot for work and my own web design, etc. I did the site for the local BMW club, actually. Next up comes another addition to the suite to help me go Flash capable on the site.
