View Full Version : My friend's "new" car (TD you'll like this)
My friend just bought this as a "fun" car (his other car is a 2002 530i).
1987 E30 325is
128000 miles
$1050.00
It looks a little ragged, but I'm confident it will be a blast to drive.
And I'm only one of a handful of guys here still lusting after E30s.

He didn't care about the interior too much... he's going to replace most of the inside to prep it for track duty. He's already started restoring the exterior.

Give me a few weeks and we'll see if I still lust after one myself.

This one is NOT for sale, but it belongs to someone in my autocross club. He's coming over tonight so I can give it a whirl.
Depending on how that goes... I can't keep both, but I can have more money for autocrossing/tracking if I had an E30. Not to mention leftover funds for a dog hauling lemmingmobile/tow vehicle.

I love it. The march backward in time continues.
While I will be jealous, my needs/priorities just cannot justify a car like that.

Yeah, it's definitely not as family friendly as even my coupe, never mind a sedan. It's pretty much useless to anyone other than a true car enthusiast, especially to the wife. "My god, that thing is HIDEOUS" is about the only reaction I've gotten out of mine. :D
Still, for $20k or less, I can own one of these puppies AND something like a '97 Exploder with a reasonable number of miles. I will then be able to carry plenty of people, cargo, and canines in comfort, which simultaneously being able to drive the piss out of something and not worry about having to drive it to work on Monday. Seems like a good deal to me, and the savings I realize will more than cover maintenance and track/autox days.
The question remains: Will I love the drive as much as I love my current car? Despite a pedigree that doesn't come close to the E30 M3's, The E36 M3 really is an awesome car even in U.S. trim. I just find it too plush for truly hard driving, and once modded (which I haven't done yet) I find it too harsh for commuting. It's perfect as a "best of both worlds," but only if you understand that it's the best balance of sport and comfort and not the best expression of either.

Where did this car come from? Can't see it coming from NY, with 128k it'd be a rust bucket from the salt... unless it was garaged for the winter.
After thinking about it 15k/yr x 15 = 225k so with 128k maybe that's true...

I think that your friend's 325is looks very good for a 1987 car. I'm surprised at how good it looks given the age (and the price he got it for). How'd he find it? The gears are starting to turn in my brain.... Is there anything that needs fixing right off the bat?
:eeps:
For $1050 that car looks pretty darned good. Yeah, I'm on the list of those mulling over the idea of an E30. Maybe a 325, in red. Mmmmmmmm......

that is just beautiful!
There was a red 88 325is in the local paper. It sold within 2 days. 163,XXX miles, asking price was $3000, he sold it for $2300.

For $1050 bucks, I'd say you can't go wrong. The engine looks a little sketchy though. Who cares about the interior/exterior for a track car..? :p
Look at this! Sweet! Already sold though.

i don't think you guys have shopped around much. even if you were buying from a dealer, that figure is too high.

You're right. I have not shopped around. Is that really high? Huh. OK, there's something else I learned today.
The other was not to buy a used car from you! ;)
