Hi all. I've been lurking and reading and lurking and reading. I finally think I understand most things regarding ED. Picked out my car (328xi coupe) and talked to a couple of dealers regarding US versus ED delivery and all said the same thing... October delivery and MSRP for allocation car or November (December re-delivery) and discount for ED. I have a problem however. The 6 year old car I'm currently driving is starting to have some problems and I would like to get rid of it ASAP. I would not feel comfortable selling it to a third party at this point. For those of you who have done a trade in with ED, when did you trade it in? Also, just curious how BMW is with regards to trade-ins. Do they use book?

Regards.

This is more of an ask a dealer question.

In general a BMW dealer won't keep a 6 year old car with problems. They are going to send it out for auction. You should get about or a little less than what the car is worth at auction.

We turned in our 325i last month when the lease was up. That was about 2 weeks after we placed our ED order. Our pickup is late September and we expect redelivery around Thanksgiving. In the meantime we are sharing one car. Debbie gets it most days and I take the bus to work.

I would sell the car to a third party, be open about your reasons for selling and the cars issues and price the car accordingly. You will still get more than a dealer will pay. ED's are bought before you go to Europe; if you do not have an additional car, rent from the dealer, Enterprise or (?) for the time before and after your trip till redelivery. I think the time to discuss this with the dealer is while you are negotiating. Every dealer has a pink Pinto somewhere.

You'll probably get a better deal with CarMax; check with both to see who offers you the better price.

With ED, you can either trade-in now or later (depends on you and dealer). If you trade in now, then you will have to see of the cost of a rental for the additional 2 months (between US and ED program delivery) is worth it.

I have a feeling that CarMax will be able to offer you more than your BMW dealership; maybe even enough to cover 2 months of additional rental.

If you trade in the car now with BMW or sell to CarMax, you will be looking at a hefty rental bill for between 4-6 months; depending on your car preferences, that may not be cost effective.

My dealer would have let me keep my car until redelivery if I traded it in. That's somewhat common and the least hassle approach.

If you can stick it out till redelivery and sell it on the open market, it would probably be the best financial deal for you.

I actually sold my car privately after redelivery.
