Hey
I want to give my engine a good flush out before doing my oil change at the weekend
Any product recommendations?
I know Seafoam for cleaning the injection system, but this is for the oilways.
I am doing it as i have a horrible rattle from inside the engine (not the chain tensioner) and want to try this before replacing lifters (£500-£600)

Ouch, so the sound is more from within the engine, rather than something on the outside of the block?
I'm not sure about products, I was just going to ask what thickness of oil you were putting in. Also how many litres including the filter? It turns out mine is 4 litres, I though it was 4.5, but I have 1 litre left in the bottle out of 5!

I am using 10-40 fully synthetic Mobil 1 mate
Think it is 5.5 litres on mine
I was wondering if the valve that keeps the oil around the cam is all gunked up and so is not working properly. Guess we will find out soon :)

I'm curious, do you all use SeaFoam in the normal can or the aerosol?

I used a flush called Forte Flush and is the best i have ever used. Most of the ones you get off the shelf are just paraffin based but this really did get rid of a load of crap!!

Hey buddy, welcome to the fest
Your 4 banger is not really made for speed but you can indeed do some bits to help
Have you read my Mod thread? - http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=205147
If i was you, i would start with a full service and add Iridium IX spark plugs, then maybe add a CAI. I know they dont do as much to your engines as they do to out straight sixes as the MAS doesn't really recognise them but it WILL help and gives you amazing sound too :)

£7.20 but didn't shop around :(
Excellent stuff though, very impressed. Make sure you run it on idle for at least 30 mins :)

i was probably gonne leave it in for a couple of days to be honest
the last one i got was pants said to run engine for half hour then drain
but i could still see build up when i opened the oil cap

You mean run the car on the road with it in there??
Dont do that dude, it makes your oil WAY too thin

lucky if i do 50 mile in a couple of days though
when i had a mondeo(years ago)i got an engine flush and it said to leave in for a week that seemed to do the job thats why i was gonna leave it in a couple of days

I had a rattle that turned into a squeaking, but only happened when I pressed the accelerator - sounded like it was under the bonnet. When the suspension coils were fitted, it disappeared. I'm happy, but not sure how it was connected to the accelerator!

the torque applied under throttle lifts the front a lil, maybe it was relieving enough pressure to make the squeak?

I think I would go with that explanation. Mystery solved!
