Have you cleaned your ICV matey? - http://www.unitedbimmer.com/kb-e36-icvcleaning.php
Any performance issues when you get going? If you are then it could be an air/fuel filter blocked or even a bad spark plug or coilpack...

Thaought you said there was no performance issues.....
Cam sensor is a possibility and so is the O2 sensor.
Do you have any diagnostic software/tools?

Yeah
Could be un-metred air getting into the system though a vacuum leak. Check your intake boot (the black, ribbed one behind the air filter) for damage.
When i bought my baby, the boot was worn and she ran like crap!!
Also, check your throttle body for gunk as this can cause a very uneven idle

Pete this is a car site not a dating site :bigpimp:
Pete might be on the right path with Cam or ICV. Also you can pick up some http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html BG44k in the can and run it through.
Also when was the last time you did a tune up. Plugs, fuel filter, check vent tubes....

Thanks for that mate.....appreciated!!!
When was the last time the air filter was replaced? If it's bad enough . . .
Throttle body or a dirty mass air sensor perhaps. Or, if you recently installed a filter that uses oil, you might have used to much and coated a sensor with oil.
The good news is it *most likely* will be an inexpensive problem to fix, once you figure out what the problem is.
