my guess is a bad battery..if you are getting 13 on it...then you have a complete circuit...but check all leads anyway.

the battery is good and holds a charge. I also tried checking the voltage from the jump post in the front and it doesnt show the alternators output anymore ideas

Check the alternator wiring. Make sure the wires are clean at contact points and properly attached.

well after trying to copy and paste from the bentley for the last 30 mins or so i wrote it all out for you. this is almost word for word out of the book.
1. turn the ignition on. check the charge warning light comes on. if light fails to come on repair any wiring or bulb faults before continuing to check charging system
2.remove terminal cover from rear of alternator
3.check for battery voltage between ground and B+ at back of alternator. then turn ignition on and check for vlotage between ground and D+. if voltage is not found at either point, check for wiring faults
NOTE: terminal B+ is supplied voltage directley from the battery. termainal D+ is battery voltage supplied via the charge warning bulb when the ignition is on or the engine is running
4. if no faults are found at this point, test alternator output.
5.if a load tester is not available, a crude output test can be done by reving the engine at 2000rpm and turning on electrical loads ( headlights, fans, rear window defroster, wipers). when fully loaded battery voltage should be at least 12 volts.
if the check charging light is burnt out or there is a break in the wire off D+ then the alternator will have no output.
i am trying to figure out how to post a picture on here of the charging system schematic, but i cant do it, any one????

I'm just a dumb American. If I were smarter I'd make sure the ground strap from the engine to the chassis was connected.

Euro,
Glad to hear you're one of us although I still don't understand your "dumb American" reference. Sorry to hear you took one for those thankless f**ks over there.
I'm pretty sure the alternator wiring is foolproof. If you have an underhood battery try using a jumper between the alternator housing and the battery -.
Regards,
Ross (dumb American)

ok my buddy frank is a retard, i double checked all the wiring and he hooked up the starter and put both of the cables on the first post so no power from the alternator would go to any thing but the starter so problem solved thanks for all your help

I was in Darmstadt Germany for awhile. BMW's/mercedes are damn cheap there. I miss that place. Was wierd that most of the women smoked though.

yep BMWs are cheap here I have owned 4 for a grand total of 7000 USD and they were all in great condition.
Well after i got my engine running right I did what anyone would do and drove it around for a day to break the engine in and get all the fluids circulating right then i took it on the autobahn fun. next day i start it drive to work turn it off and hear what seems to be my throw out bearing the i remebered my freind cleaning off my transmission and asked him were he sprayed grease off and he said everywhere I said even the bell housing he said yeah why not?? So the throw out bearing got grease off where there is sopposed to be grease so next tuesday got to drop the tranny again it will be FUN!!!
