View Full Version : My beautiful car, never been in an accident, and some woman RAN INTO ME!

Some STUPID woman hit me today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ran into my driver side, I think they ran a red light! I am still trying to figure out what happened. I was just driving down the road, and I remember being jolted and not knowing what was going on, then I remember thinking, "I can not believe this just happened." I sat there for a minute, took in what had just happened, and called the cops to file a police report. I do not know if she got a ticket, but I got her information, and she WILL pay for this!!!!!

I am definitely going to file a small claims for like $1000.00 or so, because now the resale value is less since it has been in an accident. She won't get away with this! She was driving a silver SUV, Chrysler, probably a newer model, I took lots of pictures because I always carry my digital camera with me.

I am still in shock that my beautiful car is now damaged, all down the driver side.

She ran into me right in front of my driver door, about a 45 degree angle, the impact made my front end swing away in the direction of the passenger side, and her car hit mine again where the driver rear wheel is. It gave me a flat, but I wasn't about to let my car rot in a junkyard! I got out the spare, changed the tire, and it is drivable again.

When I looked back, I realized it was all cosmetic, but.... IF I WOULD HAVE HAD A KIA, I WOULD BE D E A D !!!!!

Such a safe car, our BMW's. Saved my life, along with the seatbelt.

The structural integrity of my car does not appear to be compromised, I think I just need a new front driver side panel, rear driver side panel, new driver side rear tire and rim, new front driver side rim, and the driver doors might need replaced, or maybe can be fixed. I would rather have new ones, It should be exactly as it was before she hit me.

Stupid drivers. She had kids in the car, and an elderly woman, too. No one was hurt as far as I know, but she could have killed people; and now I have to drive a wrecked car. I don't think I'll drive it until it is fixed.

I almost cried.

See, and there is my phrase happy to own a Bimmer. I am really sad, this car is/was my pride and joy.

sorry this happened, and make sure all is fixed and such... damn. One woman drove into me head on in her mercedes and crashed my VW jetta bad (see my garage).

BTW. dont despair. Theyll fix it and it will be like new. literally. :) It's not your fault and it can always be worse. She could have went faster. She could have hit your door first, not ahead of you. You have have been in a KIA. :)

Hey man, don't worry about it. If you have her info and there was a police report, then insurance will take care of it. Also, keep in mind if the quote insurance gives you isn't enough, you can go around and get quotes from other body shops, and get a quote from the one you want to use, for exactly what you want done. Don't settle for what they tell you! Sorry to hear about it though, I completely understand what you must be going through, I can't imagine what I'd do if that happened to my poor baby!

Can you show us the damage?

BMW E36s are not safe cars, they were designed late 80s and as such didn't really have that much safety in mind.

Glad you are okay though, and hopefully you'll get it sorted. Any pics?

Hey buddy, sorry to hear about your car, i would be devistated if it happened to me. Fingers crossed it all gets sorted and she is back to her best asap

B/\/\W, they ARE a safe car just maybe not by the standards of today. If i HAD to have a crash in a car, i would chose a BMW any day as they are built well and are structurally strong.

You could have a 5 star Ncap rated car and still get mullered in an accident!!

Conehead
08-18-2007, 04:44 PM
Least your not dead. Side impacts can be quite horrific. The car can be fixed. Dont dispair.

I have to admit tho, as Pirate said, no matter whet your Ncap rating is, dosnt mean you are going to be OK. It still comes down to simple physics....the bigger car wins. Weight beats everything in an accident.

You are lucky you are OK.

There have been safety standards in place pretty close to the entire time that cars have been built. They may be better now than before but safety is always in mind. In the 80's and 90's volvo used to test their front ends by driving them off 2 storey buildings just to see if they were safe enough.

:( That's one of those good and bad situations. The good part is there is most likely not any structural damage. The bad part is that she managed to f up practically every possible panel and piece along the drivers side....*****! I'm 100% sure you won't be able to get new doors, those are pretty decent, and the front 1/4 panel looks to be in good shape, that should be very easy to pop out and refinish. I'd seriously make sure that you get a whole new rear 1/4 panel, though. Make sure you ask whatever body shop you choose to quote you for a whole new panel. That fender area will never be as well finished as new.

I'd push for a whole new paint job, otherwise it won't match, but there's a good chance that might total your car. What I'd do is make sure that side is quoted to be resprayed for insurance, and then just pay for a whole repaint on your own. Luckily it looks like most of your suspension made it out OK, but make sure you check rear wheel alignment, with that much damage to the wheel it could have thrown something off. Good luck dude, sorry to hear (and see) that!

No, there haven't. In fact, safety wasn't hardly even THOUGHT of until the late 60's and 70's, mainly when Nader came out with his book "Unsafe at Any Speed" (was that in reference to the Corvair? Can't remember)

Before that, they had metal dashboards, metal steering wheels, most cars didn't have seat belts, and the ones that did only had lap belts.

The E36 is NOT a safe car by today's standards. It has Gen 1 airbags, is small compared to most cars, and weighs a measly 2800 pounds unladen. The frame is rigid but nothing spectacular. In fact, a modern day Kia (or, especially a Hyundai) will protect you significantly more than the E36. But, I'm with M.D., safety wouldn't matter in a Kia cuz I'd kill myself first anyway.....

Hey, my girlfriend drives a Kia!

i do make fun of her a lot for it though!

Good man! Girl's need a bit of making fun of now and then. What kind of Kia does she drive? Is it decent (in Kia standards?)
For her b-day or some special thing, if you plan to stay with her for a while, sell her car and get an E36, so she can drive a real car....lol.

after looking at pics...

this is nothing. you drama queen. :D Wouldn't even worry about this.

I think BMWs from 90s are quite ok safety wise, but some of it is achieved through hard metal, and when cars crash they look ok, but remember this isn't about the car looking good after crash. The more it is crumpled, the more impact it took in that you didn't. A car can be rock solid and drivers dead inside, or fully smashed and drivers without scratch.

When afore mentioned Mercedes (old one, from early 80s!) hit my Jetta, my car's front was like mashed potatos. Hers, has broken bumper... can't argue with mass... :)

Phantom, I looked up the side panels, don't you think it would be better to replace it? it will cost about $98.00 without the hole for the side marker (I couldn't find one WITH the hole), and then it would be perfect. I could probably find a wrecked 328i E36 at a salvage yard and rip off an intact door (or two); I'll have to get it repainted anyway, so it doesn't matter the color, and all the internal stuff is fine.
Hey, then I'd already have the sideview mirror attached! That is a big deal, because the stock side mirror is over $100 ($112 NON-heated, $140 heated). I really think that would be not only the beast, but probably the fastest option.

Here is the costs I am hoping for, but know that I am not sure if I have everything, and I am not including any other costs such as axle or alignment or pulling the frame:

both driver doors from the salvage yard (have not researched it, it is Sunday now, they are closed) - hopefully, for just the metal part, $150 each. I'm sure they will do it, I'll just be like, "well you can make money now, or good luck selling that piece, and I'll just go get bodywork done"

driver fender: $100

driver rear quarter panel: can't find a price, maybe $100

hope for a full paint job: maybe $1500 ball park range

$179 new OEM wheel

driver side skirt, maybe $75

= $2254

Good job, moron woman driver.

By the way, 320what, I'm looking for stock M3 wheels (I like the style), too, but they are hard to find.

Plus, here's the big deal:

o. Classes start in 10 days.
o. I move to a fraternity house this coming Friday
o. I'm going to have to drive a wrecked car until I get it fixed, and now I have to wait for the insurance companies to figure out what they want to do, etc. etc. etc.
o. they say a car is never the same after it has been in an accident.

oh yeah,

o. I hear wind through the window when it is shut.

Bimmer M.D.
08-19-2007, 12:06 AM
PLUS,

o. if her insurance doesn't get back to me soon, I will have to pay a lot up front, and

o. I have enough stress in my life without have to find the best shop to fix may car, and the best way to fix it in the most cost-effective and productive manner possible!!! I still need to buy my books for class!!!

Ok, first off......what ARE you talking about?! Insurance is paying for this buddy. Get *NEW* panels. ;)
Keep in mind all you have to do is give your keys and the insurance check to the body shop YOU trust and let them do the rest. Also, if you hear whistling, then its your door frame. Not too familiar with the door construction, you may get a new door, iono.

And no, a car is *never* the same after a wreck. You *need* to research and find the very best body shop. Plus, you can rush the insurance people, and get quotes on your own as well. Just take off one day, and devote it to your car. Schedule your adjuster for like 6 pm, and spend the morning doing business, late morning thru afternoon getting various estimates. Trust me, its better to drive a wrecked car that drives for an extra week than to have the repair rushed and have it permanently "fixed" and not be perfect.

Yes, but there is only one problem.

In my surprised frustration at the accident, I had not thought to get the name of HER insurance company.
The police won't give it to me because they say they can't access the report.
The paper they gave me with her info did not have her phone number on it.

MY insurance company says that to get HER insurance info, they would need to order a copy of the police report since they cannot find her phone number, and that it takes 4-6 WEEKS to get the police report! NO! I'm not doing that! If I have to, I will go to her house and get her insurance info, with the police if I have to, I don't care, I'm not driving my car for a MONTH all wrecked!

Yeah, I'll go shop around on Monday for quotes, thank you for your help Chad :)

I am already under so much stress, plus, I have to buy my books and get a good laptop before the 29th, which is the first day of school. I don't know that insurance would pay for a full paint job, either.

On the other hand, the only reason I wanted another of the same car was because I don't want green. This can be an opportunity to get my color changed :)
I want either red or white... lol, or blue, haha not trying to be patriotic exactly :) Not black(gets dirty too easy) or green or orange, though, and I really hate orange. Hence the clear tails, though I didn't like the headlights I got; and they are not in, good thing because now I can still sell them new! :)

Also, My head and tail lights are unharmed :):D
Actually, yellow would be nice, if it is a nice shade.

Oh, and yes, the doors don't shut perfect, they are screwed up, one of the things not really noticeable in the pictures. Good thing I can change my tires! That would suck to have it towed.

I have a friend who owns a shop, but he's in Gaithersburg; but he does really good work, I have seen it, it would be worth the humiliating drive I think. I hate driving a wrecked car, because everyone looks at you, and you know it's not because they think you have a great car.

Yeah, so the goal is to make the insurance money work for me, if I do things right, I can not only break even with a Perfect car, but I can have it even *better* than when I started! :)

And I can justify this by knowing the so-called "pain and suffering" that I had to go through because of all this. I say, if something bad happens, the best thing do do is figure out a way to turn it from negativity into productivity. In my experience there is almost always a way. (i.e. I get my car smashed by some idiot driver right before school starts, and I complete the ordeal with a *better* car)

well, getting the phone number of this person is very crucial. get all that sorted, and in future, exhcange this info right on site!!!

hopefully you will have that sorted out. Any chance then for a full car respray?

The car that was in accident is never the same.. it depends what accident. Few replaced doors and wings dont matter. It usually is bad if the electronics an all that has been damaged.

No big. Do you have a name, address, license plate, obviously the make and model is a Chrysler Pacifica, etc? Then you should have no trouble finding it out. Heck, just call 411, tell them you need a residential listing, give them the last name & addy, boom, there's the phone number.

MY insurance company says that to get HER insurance info, they would need to order a copy of the police report since they cannot find her phone number, and that it takes 4-6 WEEKS to get the police report! ROFL! They're screwing you: tell your insurance company that they need to fix your car NOW so you can have a roadworthy car, or else get you a rental - and you need it NOW! Tell them its their job to go track down her insurance company on THEIR time, not yours. You pay for insurance, force the issue, they will pay. They will use their money until they can recover the money from her insurance co. That's how things work. Tell them that's how they will do it. Period. Don't let them tell you you need to drive around a wrecked car forever. Make it work on your time, not theirs.

Yeah, I'll go shop around on Monday for quotes, thank you for your help Chad :)

I am already under so much stress, plus, I have to buy my books and get a good laptop before the 29th, which is the first day of school. I don't know that insurance would pay for a full paint job, either.

Hrm, book buying sucks. For laptops, get a Macbook. They're really durable for college use, and OS 10.4 is terrific. Get the bottom end one with 3 year Apple Care. The very lowest spec Macbook will run significantly faster than a medium spec Windows. Seriously, even if you've never used Mac, they're not hardly different from a PC at all, except better functionality.

On the other hand, the only reason I wanted another of the same car was because I don't want green. This can be an opportunity to get my color changed :)

You won't be able to get a respray out of the deal. Just have them figure in the cost of respraying the drivers side, and you'll hafta pay the rest. Also, they'll just hand you a check. Just tell the body shop to pain it whatever color you want. I vote either Estoril or Avus blue. I love 320what?'s color, its gorgeous, and so is Estoril.
Also, My head and tail lights are unharmed :):D

You can take it to whoever you want buddy. Tell them you only trust this particular shop to do the work, but make sure his quote is somewhat inline with the other shops. If the adjuster and 4 other shops all say its 600 to fix the door and he says its 1500, yeah, they won't be giving you 1500. If its reasonably close, though, you can press the issue.

Yeah, so the goal is to make the insurance money work for me, if I do things right, I can not only break even with a Perfect car, but I can have it even *better* than when I started! :)

On the basis of you guys' crash safety info, I am going to drive my car off a two story building and then into a pimp mobile Range Rover. I should be fine, see you in heaven/hell if otherwise

;)

Edit: The problem is that in test conditions, you get footwell intrusion and steering wheel movement in a frontal impact more so than other modern cars, and side impact protection is poor. But, the way I look at it is that the BMW is going to handle better and hopefully keep the driver out of danger.

sometime I think the police shouldnt be chasing these joy riders. Surely it would be better just to video them than risking policemen's lives and possibly pedestrians.

The pasenger in that police car is seriously luck to be alive.

edit- oops. driver I mean. I've got so used to driving on the continent:)

let's say it how it is. Police often here at least, doesn't care about traffic rules, and would go speeding quite often.

But i feel quite bad too when i see police cars damaged. Lots of reasons why you want them to stay on the roads.

well, getting the phone number of this person is very crucial. get all that sorted, and in future, exhcange this info right on site!!!

hopefully you will have that sorted out. Any chance then for a full car respray?

The car that was in accident is never the same.. it depends what accident. Few replaced doors and wings dont matter. It usually is bad if the electronics an all that has been damaged.

True, true. However, USUALLY a front or rear end shunt is worse :dunno:

As some of the Guys have said, there is no way they would try to repair that damage. The car would never move through the excess weight of filler

Insurance Companies are a law unto themselves.

There is a well known saying ' act in haste - repent at leisure'. Just be patient Buddy - it will get sorted.

Theres a rule here in TX. Look both ways before proceeding on green. You never know who is going to run that light. I've often sat for 5 or 6 seconds after my light has turned green waiting for red light runners to go on.

You were fortunate. Looking at those photos, it could have been worse!

Wow the joy riders must have been traveling at huge speed to put that police car sideway into that lampost to cause that amount of damage.

Good to know the police officers were ok and darwian theory has saved the public the cost of imprisoning those joy riding idiots

man, my internet has been down, and I just moved to a frat house; my life has been a living hell (not because I moved into a frat house) over the past week and a half.

UPDATE:
The woman of course tried to get out of it and claimed it was my fault and that there were injuries, etc. etc. etc., but my insurance company finally turned them down on Monday (yesterday);

The woman from the other insurance company has been OUT OF THE OFFICE since Friday! She won't be back in until Thursday, so no one has made the decision yet!
She gave me the wrong email for her, so she still needs to give me that so I can send her the links; everything is going so SLOW!

I can't wait to either get my car fixed or get a new car!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for your help and support guys; any advice to speed up and/or place this whole situation more in my favor? Right now my life is in the hands of the insurance company, and if they are frickin stupid and deny me, I will have to go to court over the whole thing! Then I'll really be screwed! That all will just be a freaking pain in the @$$!!!

:yikes:

After reviewing your pics of the car - I am sorry this had to happen.

On a lighter note - I am sorry the other driver is not 25 cute and with big knockers either. Nothing notated in the photos of any sort :mad:

Good luck on getting back in the swing of things !!

When I looked back, I realized it was all cosmetic, but.... IF I WOULD HAVE HAD A KIA, I WOULD BE D E A D !!!!!

Actually, a mid size Kia just outdid the BMW 5 series for side-impact safety :dunno:

Thank you guys for your support :)

You all are right. It could've been worse.

and, "320what", lol, if I WAS driving a Kia, I wouldn't have waited for an accident. I would have already killed myself! (j.k.)

no, but really,
here are the pics for you guys:

And so there it is, and as you see it is mainly cosmetic.

Crap. I forgot that I'll probably need a new sideskirt too.

Well, hopefully it'll be fixed in a couple weeks, and I hope you're right, that it'll be just as new!

damn that sucks, hopefully you will get evrything fixed, and all will b well again. Did the police find her at fault or no? Cuz if they did then her insurance will pay 2 fix your damages

Lol, and for those of us who think these are safe cars, per the Euro NCAP, the E36 got a wonderful ONE STAR rating!

Bimmer MD, I really hope things go better for ya man!

Her insurance WILL pay, but the police somehow couldn't figure it out (yeah right), and everyone sitting around outside "didn't see anything". They did ticket her though, but The woman from the other insurance company has been OUT OF THE OFFICE since Friday! She won't be back in until Thursday, so no one has made the decision yet!

And, no, it was a fat black woman in her 40's (I am not prejudice, just describing her).
