View Full Version : Why does my coolent only leak sometimes???

Im new here, just got a 94 325is about a month ago. Ill get some pics up soon.
About 1 out of 4 days i will come out to my car in the morning or after parked for a bit and i find some coolent has leaked out. it looks. The mechanic told me waterpump, it is coming from that area but what would make it leak so sparaticly? i got everything to do it just no time yet. has anyone heard of a wp doing this?

when the bearings start to go it all wobbles, creating "weeping"
If your handy, strip off the front of the engine (t-stat, water pump etc) and check if these componants have their rubber o-rings.
Edit: im an idiot lol
check all failure prone connections...hoses, clamps, crush washers etc lol

It only leaks on odd numbered days. BMW designed it that way to frustrate new owners into thinking somethings wrong with their car.

LOL!!!
Seriously, this is a very common problem. Happens to ALL E36's. Anyway, it's most likely your water pump. I'd spend an afternoon pulling the entire cooling system out and inspecting it. If the water pump looks even remotely quetionable, or has a plastic impeller blade, replace it now and save yourself a headache. Also, replace all seals before you put the stuff back in.

Its all related to coolant level, coolant temp, and ambient temp.
