Hi Gary, visited the tirerack.com. Got an idea of what you have.

Leaning to a 225 Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D set up with 17's. But I also saw some winter rated tires on there for the OEM rims, which would be a 245 and 275. Would the wider set up even be viable? Seems to me that woul be a bit too wide.

I'm not going to be doing any hard core snow driving. Occasional trip up to the mountain or possible snow fall around here (portland, or). Mainly just good wet weather traction with cooler temps.

Should I just bite the bullet and get the rims/tires that are narrower or would the wider OEM fit winter tires still be a viable solution?

thanks!

Matt

You're correct that the wider tires would be less effective in snowy conditions, but they would still be a dramatic improvement over an all-season or especially a summer-only tire.

You'll want to consider the extra cost of the wheels versus the benefits of convenience and better winter traction of the smaller dedicated winter tire/wheel package.

For many, the higher price of the larger winter tires and the added cost of having them mounted and dismounted each season does not yield much savings versus a package over the long run.
