ED PO requires VIN?

Is it required to have a VIN number issued before the dealer can write the PO for the ED? I'm told the PO needs to be into BMW by 30 days prior to pickup. It's fast approaching 30 days for me.

Nope, all he needs is a production number.

My dealer took the same position and I ended up calling BMW Euro Delivery directly to make sure it would not delay availability of the car. They offered to call dealer directly, but as it worked out the VIN got assigned the next day so the issue became moot. Part of it is the dealer wants to have a shot at selling you all that extra stuff (extended warranties, paint protection, clear bra, etc.) when you come in to sign the purchase order and the non European delivery arm of your dealership is accustomed to having a VIN number before they put on the hard sell.
