I did a search and couldn't really find an answer. Don't turbo's usually have a turbo timer attached to it, so it can cool down after shut off. I don't see anywhere saying that the 535 has a turbo timer, so I'm wondering, how does it cool off? Some other threads suggested that they just let the engine run idle a little before turning it off, especially when they push it hard. I'm just wondering because isn't it true, the heat from the turbo can cause wear on the turbo over the long run, creating reliability issues in the future? Thanks! :dunno:

not all cars or trucks have a turbo timer. If it doesn't have one, and you just shut the car off, my guess is that it doesn't cool off, at least not the way it should. I know people who put turbo timers on their cars that didn't have one already, not sure how it would work with the 535i however. I also know people who just shut their cars off after driving, and many of them have lasted for years. I don't agree with doing that however. I would assume its not good for the turbo to just shut it off after a hard run, especially because the impeller spins at something like 140,000rpms or so.

The N54 turbo is not lubricated by circulatiing engine oil, and therefore is not prone to the "coking" problem that normally afflicts turbo engines that are shut off immediately after being driven hard. As I understand it, the turbo lubrication is a sealed system on the N54. Nevertheless, a brief cool-down before shutting off the engine would seem to be prudent.
