Gearbox Fluid

Can anyone tell me where to check the gearbox fluid level. I have checked my owners manual and can't find it in there. I have 1996 316i SE.

there is no dipstick or actual place to check the level. You have to unscrew the upper fill plug and verify that the fluid is up to the bottom of the fill hole.

The manual probably just says "take it to BMW dealer when your dash says so".

As other Jason suggested. There are two plugs, one for filling, one for draining. Stick your finger in it.

Diffs and gearboxen usually don't use much oil, it's not like the engine, which actually burns it. Change time depends on now nicely you operate it.
