Any help to locate this sensor on a 318i E36 M42 engine

The part number is: 0 280 130 026

I want to change it by my self.

You'll have to elaborate a bit more than just "engine temp sensor"
Do you by chance mean the coolant temp sensor? Also, what engine do you have? There are about 3 different engines in 318's.

The one at the bottom corner of the radiator/expansion tank?

Here you go, under intake just behind and to the passenger side of the oil filter. There is another sensor behind that one that is black and is harder to get to and another below it on the oil filter this may be an oil pressure sensor and not temp, but I'm not positive.I've changed the blue one before and it can be done without removing anything else, the other one behind it may require removal of the intake unless you've got small hands.

hi

so the blue sensor is the engine temp which sends the signal to the temp gauge on the cluster yes, (via ECU i take it)?
what is the black sensor behind the blue sensor as in greenbeem's photo for?
is it the rpm sensor or camshaft sensor, and is the camshaft sensor on any car, the way revs are measured, stupid i know but just wanna be sure?

i was wondering if i replaced the engine temp sensor will my water temp gauge on the cluster work properly? also if i replace this black sensor too will it fix the rpm problem if not, can you tell me what the black sensor just behind further under the manifold is used for?

thanks
ronnie

Now this is based on what I'm seeing at Pelican Parts, The Blue one is a "sensor" 20 degrees Cel 2500 Ohms. The black one appears to be a "sending unit" 120 degrees Cel so it "appears" that the blue one being bad would affect engine performance the black one would just make the gauge not work.

The cam sensor is in front above water pipe, I "think" the cam sensor is for ignition timing (amongst other things) and the crank sensor determines rpm, but I'm not 100% about this (except the location of the cam sensor).

hi

thanks for your help, funny enough i had been talking, well emailing, the guy at pelican parts and he suggested to check the wiring not corroded, so i reached in and removed the plugs and pushed them on again to ensure they were ok. the metal clip was in the correct position, it clicks out when connection made as you know.

no change though in engine temp gauge, so may need to replace sensor then?
if the easter egg test moves all the gauges, i take it the cluster is ok?

are the sensors expensive, the rpm crankshaft and engine temp one?

cheers
