So I went to the dealer today. My clutch has been going almost since I got the car a year ago.. Now its just too junked up to keep using.. Brought it to the dealer. Quoted me at $1200!!!!

Thing is.. I can't find an independent shop that I'd save more than a hundred dollars if I brought it there instead.

Is $1200 normal?? What have any of you paid for a new one??

It's normal for a dealership (esp in Chicago!). My local guy said he can do it for 900 bucks.

I have 90K on the clock and I'm racing the thing. I can't imagine how much longer she will hold out. Do you really have 289000 on your 328!?

The clutch kit itself is around $600, so that seems about right. It's not too hard to do yourself, though.

Well I'd drive out there if I could and have it for $900 but eh.. yeah.

I actually just hit 295k

Clutch kit is $400 It's about 6 hours of labor too.. And I don't think its that easy to do..

I do about 50% of repairs myself.. But that's just one that would probably take me a week to get done..

I didn't realise it was so expensive to replace, I'm going to make sure mine lasts until I junk the car now!

Yeah.. I totally thought it was gonna run me $600-$700.

Then I made a few calls and my mouth dropped..

I just don't get it though.. My friend got his Jeep's clutch changed for $600.. Is labor thAt much easier on a Jeep??

Yeh I've heard of clutches on other cars being replaced for £250 or $500, but that was for an old Rover 214 my bro had as his first car, it was a pile of junk that had been clocked back about 50k miles!

I got a quote for $600 by a reputable transmission shop near me. I also got a quote for $675 from the local "German vehicle specialist" nearby. I think your getting hosed Ianiac!

Just got mine done in New Jersey, it cost me $1100. Not at a dealer.

Seriously, CT has one of the highest cost of livings out of the whole US. According to cost of living by city comparison, it says...
The cost of living in Chicago is lower than the cost of living in Hartford. If you make $100,000.00 in Hartford and move to Chicago, you will only need to make $89,975.35 ($10,024.65 less) to maintain the same buying power.

That equates to a $5 an hour difference in pay roughly. I'm sure that you can find a better price for a clutch swap somewhere, so start calling around!

BTW, most of Jersey is right around the same cost of living as CT.

Sorry, I was quoting the Sachs performance clutch kit. Seriously, a clutch job isn't so bad, so long as you have four jack stands, and a jack and the right tools. Make sure you use the jack on the bell housing when you release it. It's rather heavy.

Just done some research. Here, (Aust) $265 for an after market clutch kit, and about
$150 -$200 to install it.

I've done 8 clutches now on different Jeep vehicles and just recently read a nice write up on preforming one on a BMW. Rear wheel drive clutch replacements are pretty straight forward, as long as you have the tools. I helped my neighbor replace his clutch on his 99 Maxima. Screw that! What we had to do just to get to it was a nightmare. Am I missing something here as to why everyone seems gun shy about doing it themselves or having a wrenching party with their friends?

So everyone understands, I am in no way trying to bash anyone. I'm new here and coming from 10+ years of offroading/rock crawling so I'm used to fixing my own junk after I break it. Just trying to understand.

I think it has to do with the nature of the cars. If you're rock crawling, you almost expect to break stuff or at least mess some things up, so tooling around and fixing things doesn't have such a shock associated with it. On the other hand, certain people here are just simply put off by the possibility they might mess something up. Certain mods/jobs just spook them (most often underneath the car or buried in the engine).

Thanks for some clarification. Being new here, I'm just trying to read the old threads and get a feel for the place. Well, back to trying to find a 328i.

I just did my clutch 4 months ago. I spent $300 for the Clutch kit from Pelicanparts (for a '95 318is), $550 for a new flywheel (the old one was most likely the original ) and did it all myself. The last time I replaced a clutch was about 10-15 years ago. So I went in to it kinda nervous. Followed the DIY and everything went pretty darn smooth, took about a day once I got started.

I was quoted from a Independent Shop for $900 just to do the clutch, they would have more than likely added another $900 for the flywheel when they finally got to it. :tsk:

So total cost was about $900 for parts and tools to do it myself. So I ended up saving alot. Now I'm not so nervous working on it myself.
