I'm getting that bumping noise on the back because the top of my shock has seem to pass where it should be. For God sake, i don't even know what i'm saying...just look at the pic. and give me some feedback..

looks like they are on the way out to me. I currently have one that looks like this, but my other is fine. I have brand new GC ones sitting on my desk but I am waiting until I do the suspension in the spring to replace them because the car will be in storage for the winter except for a few short drives to clear the cobwebs.

GC= Ground Control. One of the best there is. The other "best" is Rogue Engineering. They are almost identical in design.
I get a VERY slight clunk from the side that looks like yours only when i am cornering and hit a bump at the same time. Otherwise I hear no sounds.

Well, I'd say if your getting a clunk over bumps, the RSM's are a great place to start. You can find RSM's at pretty much any BMW parts website. There is another thread that has a list of cheapest to most expensive, in order of which are "best". I'd say that you want to go with either "repair shop" RSM's or Meyle heavy duty RSM's. They are the most cost effective/sturdy replacements. If you go with OEM, buy the E46 convertible ones as they are slightly more resilient.
Check Turner (http://www.turnermotorsport.com/html/subcategory_detail.asp?modelcode=E36&subcat_id=96)
for a good selection or
bimmerworld (http://store.bimmerworld.com/shared/StoreFront/default.asp?CS=bimmerworl&BusType=BtoC&Count1=174770534&Count2=91910958&CategoryID=37&Target=products.asp)
for some other choices.
Of course, there is always Pelican Parts (http://www.pelicanparts.com/bmw/catalog/shopcart/BE36_catalog.htm)
For OEM replacements.

I had the same prob on my E30
Where the rubber mounts meets the shock absorber, that part of the frame rusts through and the shocks can pop up in2 the boot
It's a common fault on the E30 and E36
I can't tell from the pics if this has happened 2 ur car, but if it has, u need 2 get it welded
Buy some OEM rubber mounts 2 - there worth the money!
The 'clunk' noise I had dissapeared when I changed the rubber mounts and shocks. I wa lucky the holes hadn't rusted thru!

If buying from Bimmerworld, I'd go with the lifetime ones before the HD ones. The lifetime ones are based on the JTD design and they are top notch.

If you don't want ones that are too expensive, the Meyle Heavy Duty RSMs aren't too bad and they fix the defect the stock RSMs have to make them more durable without a sacrifice in ride comfort as with urethane.
