I am getting conflicting information in my search for winter tires and rims. I have an opportunity to buy ASA JH3's for my 2007 335i sedan. The specs are 17*7.5 with a 40mm offset. Is 40mm too much? Before I go ahead and buy these I would love some concrete information.
Thanks very much!

i think so...
normal E90 wheels are ET34
here's the note from the TR on the offset 40 JH3s
ET40 JH3 with 18mm spacer must use 205/50-17 XL tires
i suspect that you need an 18mm spacer to run the ET40 rim and clear the brakes on the 335i

Correct.
Its the 32mm offset version that clears the brakes without the need for spacers.

I looking for winter tires and wheels for our 335i Coupe with Sport Package, I saw the information below about tire pressure monitoring.
What is the best way to proceed on this?
Do Tirerack authorized installers typically understand how to do this?
Is it better to buy new or to re-use the OEMs from our summer tire?
INFORMATION FROM TIRE RACK WEB SITE THAT I WOULD LIKE ABOVE ANSWERS ON:
Your vehicle is equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system that requires a sensor to be installed in the tire and wheel assembly for proper operation.
The original sensors from your original wheels can be used or you may purchase sensors from The Tire Rack.
Your system includes:
TPMS SENSOR (REQUIRES SEPARATE
$152.00 for a quantity of 4
TPMS 43MM VALVE
$32.00 for a quantity of 4
Total Price: $184.00
Additional Information
If you purchase a Tire & Wheel Package when you buy new sensors, the sensors will be installed on the wheels at no additional charge. Otherwise, you will have to arrange for installation by a trained technician after your new wheels are shipped to you. The Tire Rack's Recommended Installers are available to help you with your installation needs and can be selected by ZIP Code in the shopping cart.
Once installed, you will need to read your vehicle's owner's manual to review the proper procedure for allowing your vehicle to "recognize" the new sensors.

the tpms sensors are mounted inside the tire/rim assembly. if you plan on putting your summer tires and rims back on after winter, its going to cost you way more to unmount the winter tires, remove the sensors, install on the summer rims, mount and balance the summer tires.
this is what the sensors look like before they're installed inside the rim.

reusing the originals is only really feasible if you're doing a full time replacement of the rims and tires. for seasonal swaps, you need the sensors in both sets. Most tire shops should have no problem with the install, the valve stems (the part the sensor screws onto) is installed like any bolt on stem. the sensor is attached to that with a hex bolt.
If you buy a set of tires and wheels and the sensors from tire rack, they'll come mounted, balanced, and sensors preinstalled, so all you, or the shop has to do is swap the wheels. five lugs on each wheel and you're done. you may need to reset the tpms in either the control menu on the dash or in iDrive, depending on your car. its pretty painless. its a huge plus to buying the whole setup from TR, in reality all you need is a jack, lug wrench, and torque wrench.
I do this on all my cars, it usually takes me about 30 minutes to swap out the full set.

The cost of dismounting both the summer tires and remounting of winter tires may exceed the cost of the new sensors, so very few end up actually reusing the originals for winter packages.
For winter packages with sensors purchased at the same time : we already mount the sensors inside the wheels, so the installer need not have any knowledge of TPMS sensors (even though most do).
