Oh dear, that doesn't sound too good.. What does it mean?
Thinking logically about the context the phrase is used, I think it may mean making a slow car look like a rocket? Pretending to be what one it actually isnt? :D
Well, My 320i was like someone elses toy I guess before me and its got lots o M3 bits on it. Side trim black thingies, white indicator bits, maybe splitter area, skirts etc (Im new to owning a bimmer and M3s out my price range always so Im bit ignorant of the detailing, bar to say I know they are muy rapido..)
It originally had a big fattttt exhaust on it and I have reverted it back to its original one as i dont want something that is boy racer ish now im 40 :cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:
However it is badged as M3..... I realise that this is kinda sacrilidge to some (i.e pirate) so is this where i reallly become a rice head? should i remove the offending mark-up? or just keep upgrading performance so it wont get questioned :-)

Your car is a transvestite.

Lots of people put M3 cosmetics on their cars. Perfectly normal, as Motorsport cosmetics tend to be a bit prettier than standard 3-series stuff.
However, that M3 badge is a deal breaker. Take it off! Leave it de-badged or put 320i back on. The pinnacle of riceyness is putting badges or stickers on your car that have no reason to be there.

Yeah, the M3 badge makes you a wannabe loser, sorry.

Agreed, I'd like to see you try to race a 323 or 325 with your M3 badge and fail!

The ///M badges on the wheels are fine, they just mean it's a Motorsport part, its not calling your car an M3. The badges on the trunk and side moldings have got to go, though!

Anything with ///M is fine. Once it gets the three next to it, it becomes a problem.

Because he hasn't seen any of my tirades yet...

Any badges that say///M3 on a non ///M3 car should be removed and burned! ///M badges are ok as they are designating the part as a motorsport or m-Tech part.

You could just take the 3 off and leave the ///M... Thats kind of a compromise!! nice looking car tho mate

Remove the trunk badge. Regardelss of how fast you make you car it isn't an M3 and will never be an M3. As they say here in the south:
"If the cat has kittens in the oven would you call them biscuits?"
Anyway, as for the M parts on your car- The wheels look good, the air dam is aerodynamic, the door mouldings.... well they do something, so basically those parts are funtional. But the trunk badge has got to go.

Not the version that I've heard. Besides, it's not relevant to this subject. You say that for example when a Chinese person is born in Spain and calls himself Spanish.

I always associate the M3 badge with the engine, drivetrain and suspension as opposed to the looks. You cant get imitation bodywork but not imitation S50's and S52's :)
(though i bet someone has tried to see one on ebay)
v33_n0d3

I associate it with the VIN number. You can put an M3 engine, drivetrain and suspension in any E36 but that still doesn't make it an M3 by my book.

Much better way of putting it
If it didn't roll off the production line as an M3...IT AINT AN M3

If it started life as a regular 3 series but someone's added all the M3 bits, then it's an M3 clone. Almost equally as cool as a true M3, but not to be referred to or badged as an M car.

Nothing wrong with ti's. They're light as hell. Drop an S50/2 in there and watch it fly.

I saw one of those yesterday. Red ti, M3 front bumper, S50, big BBS's, H&R/Koni's, big brakes, racing seats, etc etc etc. It looked pretty serious.

Calm down! lol!
Your ti looks just fine, and I didn't say All ti drivers are jackasses!
You can't argue that there are a staggering number of ti's with impossibly large DTM tips, big wings, false ///M badges, 19" wheels, etc etc....
Thats who I was referring to. Some ti's are very tastefully mod'ed like the one I mentioned a few posts back.

Congrats on the new car, hope you enjoy the bimmer experience as much as we do and welcome.
I'm afraid I agree with the others, by all means upgrade your car (it is yours), but get rid of the the badge.
And a very BIG  for reading to forum before posting.

how many ways can we make a point about the lack of m3 authenticity being a bad thing?
