View Full Version : Gearnob getting really hot.

Not sure if this is a problem or not...
Basically today I noticed my gearnob was warm, removed it and I cannot touch the metal shaft without actually burning myself.
I don't remember it being warm before today.

Maybe your gearbox is producing too much friction and the heat is going back up through the gear linkages etc?
The main reason for my post is to say good luck with the turbo, and nice alloys and brake pads!

Danger Will Robinson!
Might want to see if you have any oil left in that tranny.

Any recommendations of what oil to put in it would be great, thanks.

There was no sarcasm you fool!
Seriously, nice alloys and brakes. A turbo 328i is going to be VERY quick as I'm sure you know! Turbos and BMWs I don't really like going together, but still, would be impressive!

It's perfectly normal for any car's gear selector rod/shift knob to become warm when you're driving it, but if it's getting so hot that it hurts to touch it, you have a problem. That means your tranny is getting too hot. If the fluid is good you might want to have your clutch checked.

I meant to ask you something.
There's a BMW junkyard called Strictly German about 1 hour outside of Atlanta that I frequent. They got a new receptionist that just moved here from England, and she is positively the most charming person I've ever spoken to on the phone.
Anyway, I asked how late they were open and she told me that they closed at 6, however the gate wouldn't be locked until "a quarter pound." I have no idea what this means but I was so entranced by her sexy accent I didn't even realize that I had no clue what she was talking about. I thought you might translate for me.

The gear nob is warm, with the nob removed the shaft is too hot to touch.
Can anyone confim this is not normal for me please.
It's getting to the point of do i keep it or move on, took it to a BMW specialist today and they had no idea.
The also said my problem with wack handling is a mystery too, he just confirmed it was awful to drive.

You sure she didn't say "quarter past"?
Quarter pound is 25...

She definitely said quarter pound. I've never heard it before. A quarter past is a commonly used term for "15 minutes after" here in the states. That wouldn't have confused me. Anyway, she was charming, I could have listened to her talk about cars, Algebra, cats, or the history of Chevrolet for that matter.

I would guess at 6:15, not a common English phrase that I know of, but a pound is round!

If I decide to keep it am I basically looking at a gearbox rebuild then as my clutch seems fine.
What I don't understand is it works perfectly and selects gears fine just gets a bit hot.

Rebuild my ass! The Getrag 5-spd tranny in our cars are a dime a dozen because they NEVER wear out. I've got a number for a place that literally has 100 of them. PM me if you want that info.

Excuse my stupidity but if they never wear out what is wrong with mine?

Ok, I guess never is the wrong word.
They hardly ever wear out. You should have no problem finding a used one for a good price. Just about every 5spd BMW from the mid 1980's until 2004 used that same tranny.

my shift knob gets warm around the base only after extended driving. i wouldn't say its too hot to touch, but warm like standing out in the sun for a while. transmission fluid is fine and exhaust is fine. guibo is bad though, but thats unrelated and being changed this weekend (pending rain) :(
you're getting rid of it or rebuilding because it gets hot? just don't use an aluminum/other metal shifter, haha...
