there are still some things i find out about my 7 that i didnt know it could do. im pretty new to the late model BMWs i used to have an e30 and it was like any other car but these new breed of cars just keep amazing me with what they can do. so i ask you bimmer know it alls, what secret moves do the 7 do that most people dont know about?...

-ive read that when youre about to turn off the 7 and hold down the start/stop button it puts on the parking brake and puts the car in park and ejects the key automatically....

any other cool things this car does...... :roundel:

Most of which occurs when new software is introduced or a new model update such as "facelift" is offered.Much of these newer "tricks" and cool functions are discovered by all of you before we hear about them.Technical Reference materials does not get updated when a software change was made that added any features.Thank you for this post,I now have something that may make a salesman buy me lunch as a bet.Keep them coming, ill get them "salespeople" on behalf of additional charges prior to delivery of vehicle.

if you dont push the key fob all the way into the ignition and it slips and pops out, it will still start. its happened to me a few times and happens when you push it in at an angle. its like ghetto comfort access.

there is a hidden change compartment in the front of the center console wall. the cd holder in the center pops out and adds extra space in there.

you can make the cd changer flap go up and down by pressing the eject button 2 times quickly in succession and the cd changer wont pop out.

the books to the car (case and all) fit nicely into the rear arm rest.

if you want all the sunshades to pop up just hold the front driver sunshade button for a 3 seconds and they all pop up or down.

if you hold both turn signal stalk buttons in for about 10 seconds, the gas and mpg meter disappear and make it nice and clean all black gauges.

in the trunk where the tools are, there is a place for the valet fob to be put underneath the wrenches.

if you enable DTC button in the Settings menu, you can do a burn out but you can't get the car sideways and it won't take away your power when you need to get going quickly.

you owe me some free lunches. :D

Hi All,

Has anyone tried this on their 2006/2007 5/6/7 Series:

Insert the Key to into the key fob (DONíT HOLD THE BRAKE).
Press the Start Button ONCE, just so the car electronics start and show the Engine light is on. (Again, Donít START the Engine).
Press and HOLD the GAS PEDAL all the way to the force down click on the gas pedal for 25 seconds.
After those 25 Seconds, proceed to Starting the Engine and drive your car.

Does anyone even use the cd holder? I haven't picked up my car yet (I hope tuesday) but I would think the room would be more useful, no? How do you get it out? When I test drove the car (I remembered reading this) I tried to pull up and it didn't budge, but I didn't pull that hard because I didn't want to break it.

its hidden, but its a snap type of "button" that will hide easily... its right above the switch to control air into the center console... you most likely will not see it, just push around with your hands and you'll eventually find it...

To shut off the mileage and gas indicators you only need to push and hold one button on the turn signal stalk (can't remember which) Pressing and holding the other button will run through all errors indicated by a yellow car icon on the NAV screen. It will not tell you about maintenance items required but will tell you about blown bulbs, low wiper fluid etc.

holding the top button for like 3 seconds does a diagnosis of the 7 and holding the bottom button for about 3 seconds clears the gauges.

You know it always surprises me how many BMW owners don't know that they can roll down the windows and open the sunroof by holding down the arrow key on the remote. And roll them up by inserting the valet key in the driver's door and holding it in the lock position.

Did you know that by programming the key memory you can have the car remember your Recirculated Air choice?

You know it always surprises me how many BMW owners don't know that they can roll down the windows and open the sunroof by holding down the arrow key on the remote. And roll them up by inserting the valet key in the driver's door and holding it in the lock position.

Did you know that by programming the key memory you can have the car remember your Recirculated Air choice?

You could do that on 7 series since the 80's. I remember because we had a 750. :p

1. From the main screen, press and hold the iDrive knob for 10 seconds, until the knob graphic on your screen changes
2. Turn the iDrive knob three clicks clockwise
3. Turn the iDrive knob three clicks counterclockwise
4. Turn the iDrive knob one click clockwise
5. Turn the iDrive knob one click counterclockwise
6. Turn the iDrive knob one click clockwise
7. Press the iDrive knob down and release

You can check your Nav OS version to make sure you have the lastest by selecting "MOST Devices", then Navigation and then scrolling down until you see "Software version"

You can also turn "RDS on" on your radio.

Enjoy :beerchug:

I just did and read my SW versions. Seems like OS is not listed or stored as it just FF FF FF ..

My car was built Jul 2006 and the components date between Jun and Jul 2006. Here are the SW versions,

MMI (assume it is the iDrive) 6.9D.B Hex
NAV 9.3.C Hex
TEL 9.6.5 Hex

Looks like checksum rather than version #.

Anyone understand these? I am interested what SW version is in my car and whats the latest version #.

Thanks.

This is what I have been able to gathered from the confusing software versions and GPS types.

V29.1 is the Navigation disk version which contains the Navigation OS software version 9.4.0A for all NAVI03 DVD-based GPS for E65/66 from 03/05 forward. The latest version is 9.6.04 contained in disk V30 released last month.

For those with NAVI02 DVD-based GPS (newer '03 E65/66 and newer models until 02/05) the latest version is 8.4.4

For those with NAVI01 CD-based GPS ('02 and early '03 E65/66), the lastest version is 7.3.2

Basically, if your software version starts with 7, you have a NAVI01 GPS. If it starts with 8, you have a NAVI02. If it starts with 9, then you have the latest DVD-based GPS computer.

E65/66 did not come with the MK type GPS, only the NAVI type.

im not sure if this will help, but in my 3 series covertible, i had an in dash tv/dvd player installed. when it was installed, they had to connect a wire from the unit to the parking brake. that way, it would ground it and the dvd player would know when the parking brake was on so it would play. i disconnected that, connected it to an on/off switch ($3 from auto parts store) and i can trick the player into thinking the parking brake is on. im guessing that its not any sort of software fix and you need to apply this same concept to it.

funny thing is that the stereo shop told me that they can bypass the parking brake function with a $45 module. i just used that on/off switch and did it myself. i hate when people try to take advantage of you.:tsk:

i only put the switch on just in case i got pulled over. i had it tucked away but still easily accessible. my friend got screwed when he got pulled over with his. so i figured if a cop tried to say i had a dvd playing, id switch it to off and say "sorry officer, it wont play."

Hit the "autopark" button on the steering wheel then when you want to park hold the start/stop and it will set the brake put it in park and eject the key

yea completly different. you dont need a switch you just put the ground and parking brake wire together.

this is not entirely true... Older navigation and tv systems worked like you mentioned, however alpine had an advanced system that required you to hold the brake, and press/depress the parking brake so the system knew the wire wasnt completely grounded... Thats what the modules were, the relays would detect power and then actuate the brake bypass sequence automatically... Most newer systems nowadays work this way, and navi based systems use the gyro sensor to detect if the car is moving while playing video... That too can be disabled, but requires solder joints on the main board...

E65 is programmed with RDS (Radio Data System) "enabled" as a factory setting. As a result some FM radio stations will be displayed as a name instead of the frequency. RDS can be disabled for those who do not want this feature.

To access the Radio Service Mode:

--- In Basic Menu display, press down the Controller for 6 seconds.
(The help text flashes briefly when it is ready).

---Turn Controller 3 increments clockwise.

---Turn Controller 3 increments counter clockwise.

---Turn Controller 1 increment clockwise.

---Turn Controller 1 increment counter clockwise.

---Turn Controller 1 increment clockwise.

---Press Controller to confirm.

---Enter "Settings" menu.

---Select "RDS" from menu and you can enable/disable audio system RDS function.

If RDS is disabled it will no longer display the station identification and current song information (artist/song title). All you get is the station frequency.

If RDS is enabled you get the station identification and current song information.NOT all radio stations broadcast data services.Usually just the big ones that doesn't have commercials/advertisement for Sal's Pizza at the corner store or DOLLAR PLUS.

To access the hidden menus for resetting the service indicators, try the following:

With your foot off the brake pedal insert the key the hit the start/stop
button, then press and hold the trip meter button. After about ten seconds you
will see service menu choices in your speedometer, cycle through them using
the trip meter button, hold the button down when you get to the one you want.
Now you will see some choices in the tachometer, using the trip meter button,
cycle to the choice you want. Some opf the resets are for scheduled mileage and some ae for scheduled dates. Re-check the services in the Car data screen
when done to make sure they reset

I just traded in my 2000 528i and purchased a CPO 2005 745i. I have a couple of questions:

1) The gas empty warning sign (the yellow gas tank icon) appears on the console and stays on. This is happening intermittently. The dealer said this is normal and the reason is because of the additives they put in gasoline. Anyone experienced this? and is the dealer correct or is he BSing?

2) How can I get a new navigation DVD for free? :) The dealer is asking $200.00+ for it, yikes!

3) Can you play DVD movies if you remove the navigation DVD in the trunk?

TIA

If you don't mind please email me if you have the answers. I don't visit this site often. email: didihala@cox.net

Thanks again.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know why I get this gas-empty warning? The dealer also said to get rid of it just turn the car off and lock/unlock to reset it, that is not a good answer, I know, and it is very annoying to see the warning since it will not show any information on your gas level, MPG info.

Sunny_j,

I read your instruction on resetting the learning algorithm. Very cool!

Couple of questions:

1) Does it work on a 2005 745i?

2) If after resetting it, the transmission adapts to your style of driving why do you need to reset this every once in a while?

But I told him nicely about this problem once and asked him to please check it, he blow it off and said "The reason this is happenning is the new aditive they are adding to gasoline these days" and said it is normal! And please remember that I have already asked him twice in a professional manner to take a look at this problem and both times he has said, without checking with any other sources, that this is normal and it is b/c of an additive to the gasoline, then he says all you have to do is to get out of the car and lock/unlock the car to reset everything!!.

rafa has a point. i definitely always try to be as polite and patient as possible but when that gets you nowhere, ask to speak with a supervisor. if that doesn't work, then raise hell and make a scene and ask them for the # to BMW North America and call them right their at the dealer. if you have 3/4 tank full, no way any additives will have that effect on your fuel gauge so that it registers as close to empty.

Every BMW owner should download and re-read the owner's manual once a year. There are AMAZING things in there.
can you provide a link for the downloads?

The procedure for establishing clearance to pull back the wiper arms for changing the blades or cleaning the windshield is covered in the owner's manual for my 03 745i under, I think, "Wiper Fold-Out:"
- Turn car off and remove remote
- Hold wiper stalk up for a few seconds
- Wipers engage to mid arc and stop, where they now have clearance to be pulled back without chipping the edge of the front hood.

I use this feature a lot because the previous owner, or someone, didn't and left a 1/2 " chip on the hood edge.

There are other points, though:
- At first it seems that if the engine hasn't been running recently the wiper fold-out won't work. But you can engage this feature without having to start the car (or run the engine recently) by inserting the remote, pressing the start button (with your foot off the brake), and then press the iDrive to accept the use warning.
- Then remove the remote
- Once you do this, the feature will operate, at least for a few minutes, presumably until the iDrive system goes back to sleep.
- To return the wiper arms to the rest position, reinsert the remote and press down once on the wiper stalk.

Here is one: When the climate control is off, pushing the OFF button turns it on without resetting to AUTO mode.

So if you had your fan at certain speed, and your heat blowing at your feet, etc, pushing AUTO to turn it on resets every back to default settings, when pushing OFF to turn it on brings it back the way it was.

Here's a secret move...washing my car today and I was using a duster to clean the dash. When I dusted over the center speaker on the dash above the iDrive screen the audio went off and reset the nav. Of course, I had to do it 2 more times and it did the same thing. I can only imagine the duster had a static charge that knocked the system out.

Man these cars are delicate.

Also, finally tried the transmission reset trick on my 06, no effect.

OH GOD NO!!! I took it to the $3 wash that happens to cost $7. It actually does a great job. Dry the car, clean the jambs, touch up the wheels, coat the tires, vaccum the inside, looks great. I go once a week then watch the pollen pile on again. I used a mobile service in the past but just didn't feel like he was getting as clean as me for 4x the cost.

Here is one that I am not sure has been covered on here:

If you use the automatic parking brake (the feature that puts the car into a temporary parking brake when the car is stopped, but that releases when you press the accelerator, there are two interesting effects:

1. When the auto brake is on (you get the green parking brake indicator when you are stopped), if you lift your butt off the driver's seat for about 2 seconds, the parking brake goes into full parking brake mode (turning red). Obviously there is a seat weight sensor in the drivers seat; (it is interesting to see if cause any other effects if you lift your rear off the seat);

2. When the auto brake is on, when you press the start/stop button to stop the car, the car (a) shuts the engine; (b) puts the car in park and (3) puts on the emergency brake.

I think most know that having the mirror adjust switch to the left triggers the adjustment of the right mirror to see the curb while backing up. What i found out by accident is that if you push your Seat Memory button (1 or 2 under the Red M on the console) while backing up and the mirror pointing at the curb, it will temporarily adjust back up allowing you to see directly behind you. I find it useful when I want to see the parking meter I'm about to hit, rather than the curb. And Yes, the sensors pick it up most of the the time too, but it's nice to see it in the mirror.

FWIW -:D

Actually, it has not been discussed if that is the only thread (and I saw that one). That thread does discuss the driver's seat sensor but only in regard to what happens to a moving vehicle after a certain number of seconds without a driver. My note discussed something different.

This is pretty cool, though I'm sure that most of you noticed it already.

I've got 4 kids who never can seem to close a door. They actually went for their first ride in the car yesterday and all they wanted me to do was make the car talk. I need to find a way to program the voice command to say something other than "pardon me". Something like "Hello Michael" in the HAL voice would be really cool whenever I started the car.

Iím not sure if this will help, but in my 3 series convertible, I had an in dash TV/DVD player installed. When it was installed, they had to connect a wire from the unit to the parking brake. That way, it would ground it and the DVD player would know when the parking brake was on so it would play.

After reading about the "reset for transmission" I finally decided to try it. Cranked my car and held the gas pedal down for 25 seconds. After about 17 seconds blueish white smoke started coming from the tailpipe and then after 23 seconds every light on the dash came on (that was pretty neat - you should try it) and then at 25 seconds I heard a loud bang and a rod came through my hood. That sucked. Went back and read the post and saw that I wasn't actually supposed to crank it first. LOL

Silly, but if you are filling the gas tank, and are in the car with the accessory power on, you can hit the button on the turn signal stalk and the gas gauge will be activated. You can watch the tank fill, and I noticed when it read full, that the tank still took at least five more litres of fuel.

That feature has been around as long as I remember. What would be nice is the reverse action -- add a button/modify current lock button to close all windows/sunroof and lock the doors. (I know you can do this by using the key in the door lock).

Alright..In the manual this said it comes with only Canadian models (2002-2005 i think)..but i dont know, maybe some of you guys have this too. it's called shifting with steptronic, which lets you shift manually, kind of like stick-shifting, but with buttons! if there is a S>M>D button on ur steering wheel, then you can do this. S is sport mode, for performance-based driving. D is the normal Drive mode if you want to go back to it. M is manual driving, which I am talking about. there are 2 silver buttons on the top of the steering wheel, which let you shift up or down. Now, i only read this once..so i might be wrong about this whole thing, but, the right one is to shift up, while the left one is to shift down. i never tried this yet, but it looks fun, and let's you take a break from the boring automatic transmission driving. i also put a pic:

I think this comes with all cars, I believe that the steptronic if handled correctly can bring out the faster acceleration in this car, meaning it's faster than just putting it in Automatic and pushing the gas pedal all the way, if you change via the steptronic at the right RPMs it will go faster than the automatic mode..

The two front buttons on the steering wheel are for downshifting, while the two buttons on the back of the steering wheel are for upshifting.

I don't know why they did it this way, it would be much better if the right front one was for upshifting and the left front one for downshifting. I figure they wanted to make it possible for the driver to shift gears while having one hand only on the steering wheel.

That feature has been around as long as I remember. What would be nice is the reverse action -- add a button/modify current lock button to close all windows/sunroof and lock the doors. (I know you can do this by using the key in the door lock).

:D

I know I'm digging up an old post here.....but...

On my UK late 2006 (2007 model) 760Li with comfort access you get the following:

1. Press (& hold) the keyfob unlock button and all the windows and the roof open.
2. Press (& hold) the keyfob lock button and all the windows/roof close and the mirrors fold up. The alarm is armed also.

No.2 above can also be achieved by holding in the door handle while the keyfob is local to the car.

Also, if the mirrors were folded up using procedure no.2 above, they auto fold out when you:
1. Press the keyfob unlock button.
2. Pull the door handle while the keyfob is local to the car.

Is this not the same in the US..?

Anyways, be gentle, it's my 1st post here...

Jerry

Upper button performes "System Check"
Lower, when pressed for about 3 sec. will "kill" the bottom displays on both gauges.

For those with Active Cruise Control:

When you drive at night, the LCD's behind the needles are off, however when you turn on the ACC system they light up. Once disengaged it stills stays lit. To get them to turn off, press the ACC stalk down (towards the floor) for 5 seconds and they turn off.

Hello everyone, Ive had my 95 740IL and have noticed that the milage lights as well as the warning messages lok like some the little bulbs are blown out so you cant fully read the Messages it tells you, but on rare occassions all the lights are lit and you could read everything Great including the temp settings and the radio station on the dash.
Is the bulbs blown or is this a short of some sort?
Thanks for the responses.

It works. Whichever direction the stalk is pressed (left or right turn signal), if you hold it and then remove key from ignition, the light will stay on until you get in the car again. You can even lock the car and the left or right angel eye and rear brake light will stay on.

Was reading elsewhere this is a common feature in most German vehicles so that if you are parking on the side of a narrow street people will be able to see your car at night.

On the 750 you only need to press the bottom button on the signal light to have an all black dash.

Do you know how to blacken the Navigation? Answer= On the 750 you will need to go to the 1.main menu, choose one of the options. 2. Choose that same option to go back to the main menu. 3. Then press down on idrive. Navigation screen will go black and only show heat and radio at the bottom.

I hope this helped some one.

Actually if you press MENU button it will go to the basic menu screen. Then press Idrive down and LCD screen goes black except for bottommost line of information.
