I was behind a freakin truck (flicking rocks up and sh!t) and we were in a single lane road. Anyways the road split into double lanes for both sides. I was sitting at about 70km in 3rd gear where i tramped it and over took him. By the time i went around him, back into the left lane i was doing 110km.

i think dom means that he passed a truck in a short time and increased his speed about 25mph/40.2kph in over the span of a 30 foot truck, but then we would have to calculate a ratio to find the distance that he was traveling, vs. the speed of the truck so we could find out how long it took him to travel 30 feet of a truck which was covering a given distance. It's a simple matter of a distance traveling a distance, and the time it takes to surpass that distance traveled. Then we would have to correlate that to the time in which it took him and the speed he was traveling at. This does not include the acceleration time..and by "We" i mean someone else who isnt dead tired after writing a film analysis paper till 6am EST.

Cars with less power are going to seem capable at lower speeds. Try overtaking others when you are both going much faster, and it takes too long (at least mine does). Which is why judging if your car can actually overtake in the time you are allowed is very important!

totally true. that even goes for my 325i too...I have a lot of power from second to fourth gear and I can keep up with my friends impreza 2.5rs, and my other friend's 3.0 contour SVT, both which are made to be faster than mine, but between 15-60 mph, i can be faster, but after that...im kinda smoked.

OK, so he out-accellerated a truck. I get to 70 mph (112k) so fast I set the bong limit there so I know. I am still learning the feel of this car, but it gets very fast very quick. When I go on a highway, I just say Limit Off. But I dont want to be doing 70 on the side roads.

The four-cylinder models (and the 320i) are slow and unforgiving if you try to drive them in the wrong gear. You can't be as lazy and drive at lower rpms as you can when you have more displacement and torque.

I sometimes start passing trucks in second. I have an audible shift-up warning to help shift from II -> III -> IV just before the 6500 rpm limit. (Or sometimes I -> II. Yow.)

Dom how many post are you going to make about how you drive recklessly, i understand you think your car is fast and that's great, but like every other day it's something new; between drifting, overtaking, racing. your going to end up dead, knock on wood, even though i do get a chuckle out of your posts.

And I hope while he does that, he stays safe. And more importantly (this is for you Dom), keeps OTHERS on the road safe.

Because I'm bit afraid of next threads starting to be about Dom trying to get above 150 while with a girl in a car.

Im always safe on the road. Especially when i got my girlfreind with me, in that case i drive like a old man. She even complains that i drive to slow.
I only do stupid things if its safe, i will only overtake if its safe and i will push it when its safe. Even we i take it sideways i make sure its in a safe place where me hitting somthing is very minimal.

Im nothing compared to some of my mates who weld their diff together to get both wheels spinning at the same time and they do gutter to gutter sideways anywhere they can without even thinking twice.

I think that the comments are not meant to be harsh Dom. People just remember back to when they were young drivers and how easy it was to for a driving situation to deteriorate. You are well liked here and people just don't want you to have an accident.

I certainly remember when I first started driving and I hate to say it but when people start driving they just don't have the experience to know how easily what appears to be "safe" driving can go wrong. I had some close calls and was by no means doing anything I considered stupid at the time!!

ok, now dom's gonna feel self-conscious about his car lol. Here's the thing...most of us here have ridden in porsche's, corvette's, touring cars, or at least some kind of car that is extremely fast, so we would be foolish to call the e36 "fast" by comparison. My car isn't really slow, but compared to my buddy's lancer EVO 5 its a snail. But my girlfriend thinks its fast...and most girls think that our cars are fast. I mean...its a bimmer, and most people just assume its a "nice car" which is really all that matters. Dom, your car is zippy and you love to drive it...thats what counts. And, youre 18...so you have plenty of time to get a jet-powered dragster. enjoy the kangaroos. peace

it took me a head on crash at 20mph on icy road in a VW to realize that even at lower speeds metal crumbles big time and that in panicky situation (car on my side of the road) I just froze and slammed the brakes and skidded into the phucker. month of getting the bus to Uni while in February -25c was not fun. it wasnt my fault, but i am bit careful since, esp on strets.

It's all relative anyway - my old Fiat was quick off the line (e.g. a city 30mph road - 0-30mph I could burn any car off because a tiny car is built for low speeds). It was soooo slooow on the fast roads though - no high-end acceleration.

My 318i is the opposite. It won't shift from a standstill at a high speed regardless of the revs (in comparison to the Fiat), but once up to 40mph+ it really does seem fast. I keep it in 5th on the highway/motorway at 70mph (or more :)), and if I feel the traffic is a bit slow, I put my foot down while still in 5th and fly past those Aston Martin test drivers (simply because they don't want to drive so fast!).

There are 1000s of slower cars and 1000s of faster cars and this one is average speed-wise.
For the record I have got mine up to around 125mph on a private airfield and I doubt if I will drive any car faster than that to be honest - my car has no mods yet either!

I have no illusions that my 318is is not an M-3 but I have to say it did save my backside not long ago.
We have some curious merges in the city I live in...off ramp... high speed ...instant merge. On this particular day I found myself between a speeding dumptruck and a concrete wall and a forced merge....he wasn't stopping. I stepped on it, hard and turned to avoid the wall and turned again to avoid the far lane. The 318 was there for me and the truck safely behind me with no harm done to anyone. Could I have done this with a Civc? Likely, but I was driving a 318is....glad I was too.

Sooooo..... it's pretty quick for a slow car? :dunno:This is going to make me sound like I'm a student of Bill Clinton, but it depends on what you mean by "quick" and what you mean by "slow". For driving the Autobahn at 180km/h (110mph), a 318is or 320i is more than quick enough. I think most of us have figured this out to our satisfaction.

Lets stop this my car is bigger than your car, my car is faster than your car p1ssing contest.

What is this emphasis on speed thing. Have we lost the point. it is supposed to be BMW E36

I bought my BMW's (on my 3rd) because they are very good all round cars. They are reasonably fast, they dont cost that much more to run, they make you feel more secure when driving (better handling, braking etc) and most importantly they look good. I am sure we could list a lot more reasons.

I think Dom was emphasising the feeling of speed and acceleration rather than the actual speed. One of my first cars was a Mini Clubman with a 1098cc short stroke engine, and when driving it you really got an feeling of speed. At mid range it really did feel like a rocket and you were sat so close to the ground which exagerated that feeling. But it was a short stroke engine so it maximum speed was only about 95mph. God I loved that car. But in todays terms it was a snail and at the time I was inexperienced.

Dom is expressing himself like a teenager but what do you expect, he is a teeenager. We should be a little more tolerant here on this forum, our common bond is that we drive BMW E36's, not that my engine is 2.5l and yours is 1.8l

I must say, I have done that. Hope there was no flash from a speed camera.

What you have to keep in mind with the 318is, if you are already moving at above 40km/h-50km/h then the car accellerates away quite nicely.

If you are stationary, then not so good with the takeoff. I dare say if my grandmother were alive she would probably be faster on the take off walking with her zimmer frame - not quite but you get the idea.

So, slow and fast with a 318is is really quite a relative thing. Given that the car is low to the ground anyway, it already feels faster at times than it really is. Go up against one of newer jap pocket rockets and its a whole other ball game and not in the 318is' favour.
