This is a video of the Lexus IS-F from motortrend. This guy does not seem that excited.

What do you guys think? There is more tire squeal than engine music....lol

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiight. So Lexus wants people to spend $60k on a car that is maybe marginally faster than a 335i? That is SLOWER than a JS1 335i?
Uh... Count me out. For that much money, I'd rather toss in a few k more & get me a c63 AMG or an M3. Those are cars, that above is a POS.
Not to mention -- this is really appalling -- but those quad exhaust pipes are fake. Only 2 are functional, the rest are for show only! not even hooked up! Pathetic.

It was on displayed at some of the Lexus events. I plan on going to the event in Austin, November 11th.

Dinan's exhaust for the E46 M3 only uses 2 of the 4 exhaust pipes. The other two are painted black on the inside to match the other pipes with exhaust build-up.
I'm impressed that Lexus is making a car that will somewhat compete with the BMW M3. I'm also guessing that because of the Merc C63 AMG and the Lexus, BMW is re-introducing the 4 door sedan again. As a last comment, BMW needs to get their dual clutch transmission going or they will lose lots of people to the Lexus and Merc.

What's really pathetic is you handing down a judgement on a car that you haven't test driven. Since when straight line performance was the only thing that mattered? My money is on the IS-F spanking the chipped 335i on a track.

Hmm, well I don't disagree with the judgmental part, but after all it's a 5L V8 with 415HP and you are comparing it with a 3L IL6 starting at 300HP. I don't think that the 335i is their target. He also said an 8 speed automatic. I assume that means a torque converter. If it does, it's not all the equivalent of the DCT that will be in the M3 sedan. Do we know what this thing costs?
Interesting that he didn't do a complete lap, so you can't get any idea what the lap time was.

Personally, I think the aesthetics of the IS-F are appalling at best. However, from what I've read, the comments here about how quick (or slow) it is vs the 335i or any car for that matter are inaccurate. Read (or drive) before you speak.

What is "the real thing" anyway?
I hope your defnition is not anything manufactured by a German automaker or BMW. I've owned my share of vehicles, and I don't try to judge it by the badge, but the actual quality of the car. Unless you have seen, touched and test-driven it in person, I don't see how anyone can judge it.
Are we so shallow to assume everything that has a roundel badge is a gift to mankind from God himself?

exactly!...the jbox 2 335i is insane on the track, not to mention a custom-fit LSD, for the money there are not alot of cars out or coming out for the next year in its class that are that well rounded! Ive even seen e9033oxis take those is2-350s:dunno:

Can you get a bit more immature?
Instead of turning the subject to whether I own my M Coupe or whether I should trade it for a Lexus, how about if you actually spoke about the car itself?
Have you, or have you NOT, test-driven the car even make those outrageous claims? It's ridiculous that you are comparing a chipped 335i to the IS-F. Why don't you make the same argument about the M3? By the same argument, the chipped 335i will smoke your M3, no? That is IF you really own an M3 (there is a bit of your own medicine for ya).

I saw the new Toyota M3 at the LA auto show - not impressed at all - they basically throw a 5 liter v8 from the LS500 in it. as opposed to the new M3 v8 with f1 type technology - the REAL thing. you think if BMW threw the 750il motor in the new M3 and called it an M-car we would stand for that?
I think F stands for FAKE.

Can you please find me an LS500?
The engine is not the stock Lexus V8 4.6 stretched to 5.0. It's been thoroughly tuned by Yamaha.
It's funny how the Audi S4 shares the engine (V8 4.2) with the A8, but no one calls the S4 a FAKE.
I realize I am not going to be a popular person here, but until I see it in flesh, I don't want to trash the Lexus just merely on looks or numbers on paper.

ok - so according to one of the major car mag articles its the same engine as out of the LS600 hybrid. massaged a bit. I wouldnt call it thouroughly tuned. the M3 motor is ALL NEW and not shared with any other cars (unless you want to relate it to the M5 v-10 in architecture.) The Lexus is a still just an Ugly Toyota with a F badge. What the F does F stand for?

LOL - maybe Fast and Furious? also Toyota had to turn to Yamaha to "tune" the 5.0 liter from the LS600hl ? I dont see Ducati tining M motors? so Yamaha takes the motor, polishes and ports it, adds cams, an intake and a valve job. All to get 420 HP out of 5 liters!?!?!?!?! and this amazing Lexus motor spins to 6800 rpm? not impressed.

At least Audi can get 420 hp out of 4.2 liters nd a V8 that spins to 8250 rpm. But you are right, and thats probably partly why Audi is always behind the curve compared to BMW. The Audi S cars can barely keep up with the previous genreation M cars.

engine by yamaha
brakes by Brembo
can get 100 HP per liter out of a refined LS460 engine
yet its Lexus best attempt yet to be german
even the chief engineer of the new F admitted the Lexus is for people that arent expert drivers. as the M3 needs an expert driver to get the most out of it.

WTF... Lexus will never become german its a Japanese based company.
Give credit to Lexus that they have succeeded in Luxury, Reliability, Prestige, and performance for what they are. Lexus sell their cars with no problems all over the world, make a name for themselves as a Luxury car mfg. Trash talking other car makes on these forums just shows how much class you BMW drivers have. :tsk: WTF did Lexus do to any of you? Did they hurt you or your family member? I have no problem with Toyota either - they built a great reliable luxury cars. I just dont think they can build as great a drivers car as BMW can.
even on paper I dont think the F stands up to the M3 especially as far as engine technology. remember Motor is BMW's middle name.
as far as 0-60 other mags have gotten slower times in the F than 4.2 sec. even so, the world is not flat and straight. I guess we have to all wait for the side by side comps the mags are sure to run.

But do you have to criticise them for trying to build a drivers car?
I mean if you were the owner of a car mfg. and company A. was building an ultimate driving machine and making alot of profit. Wouldn't you want your company to compete with them to get a piece of that pie? Naturally anyone would. And thats basically what Lexus is doing. And I think they are doing a pretty good job. IMO Infiniti/Nissan is doing a pretty good job as well. Arguably, Lexus has made a name of their brand as one of the worlds best reliable / luxury cars, now they are working on the sports segment and who knows they may get it in the future. With the IS-F consumers can enjoy a high performance sports car + great reliability, I think that is very attractive.

Watch out :D They will start calling you names if you make too much sense.
In all honesty, I think we should wait handing down our judgement until we can test drive both cars.
Case in point: when I was shopping for my Z4MC, I was certain I was getting a Cayman S based on all reviews and numbers on paper. After a test drive in each car, I drove away in my Z4MC. There are some fanatic Porsche drivers who still call me crazy for my choice, but it was the right car for ME.
Also, Lexus and other Japanese brands trying to compete with BMW, Audi and other performance-oriented cars have benefited all of us driving BMWs. BMW now makes better performance cars to fend off up-coming competition. A good example is the 335i. Without the Infiniti G35/G37 and Lexus I350 coming with larger engines, I don't think BMW would have had any incentive to give us such a large HP leap from the previous generations.

of course I can not blame Toyota/Lexus for trying to FOLLOW the leader. and yes they want a peice of the pie that BMW created. However I still would buy a 335i over the Lexus F any day, just becuase its a Toyota.
Hmmmm and you are driving a 535i? and dreaming of a AM? Dot you knowToyota builds much more dependable cars than any of the English marques.

I see on the forums how the lambo owners trash f-car owners and vice versa. For me, there's something special about each make. For instance, the Gallardo's has the menacing look with the build of an Audi while Ferrari's F1 system is bulletproof. It's like women. Hope my wife is not reading this.....You feel like Asian one day and French the next....there's something special about each depending on the occasion.

Thanks. I try to be as objective as possible. In my line work, credibility is lifeline.
I don't mean to sound like I am not excited about the new M3. I really am, but I don't want to overlook the competition.
Let's not forget what Lexus did to MB in the early 90's. No one thought Toyota (or the early days of Lexus) could compete with the Germans, and the Japanese auto-makers proved all of us wrong.
I wouldn't be surprised a bit if the M3 outperformed the IS-F, but they will surely catch up. It's a category that BMW invented and pioneered for decades, but they are closing up the gap very fast. The G37 has come awfully close to the 3-series, perhaps more so than the Germany's own Audi brand.
As an car enthusiast, this is certainly a good time to be shopping for exciting cars.

it certainly is a good time. and Lexus will surely catch up. the Japanese makers are the best at copying others success. competition is good for all of us and good for the market. however as a die-hard german car fan and particularly BMW's there is zero chance of Lexus getting me into thier showrooms.
by the way just read that the average age of Lexus owners is like 65 or something, higher than MB. and like 70% of all Lexus owners are retired. they have to build this car to survive or as the article said go the way of Oldsmobile.
