there is a loose association of indies, but I simply can not remember the anacronym for them.
I saw their ads in Bimmer when I used to read it.

Just visit or call some local places and feel them out about their experience with BMW's. I was lucky enough to have a place that specializes in Saabs right down the street from me. Stopped in for an inspection and they have BMW certs and plaques on the wall. Always lots of BMW's in the lot when I drive by. So it doesn't always need to be a BMW specific place.

Try here: http://www.bimrs.org/ This is a group of independent BMW mechanics. Website has references to your local member of the group. Excellent reference for finding folks who know how to work on bimmers.

Many of them are BMW club members.
My rule of thumb is to look for a shop that has a lot full of cars like the one I'd like to have serviced. A guy with a lot full of Buicks or Toyotas aint likely to know jack ship about BMs.
Second rule; Avoid coupons
