Basically after months of having the "spinning key" while trying to start problem, it finally got to the point where my car was stuck on the on position and the key comes right out. I can't turn it forwards or backward. I have a 5 spd so I killed the engine and disconnected the battery. Strapped for cash right now, so instead of taking it in and getting the cylinder or whatever else may be wrong replaced, I'm looking at the push start as a more affordable option.
just want to make sure i'm understanding this correctly., it doesn't matter which position the ignition is in,(on position in my case) but I should be able to start and stop it, provided the key is in the ignition..correct?
Also If I purchased this switch (http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2062508&cp=2032058.2032230.2032278&pg=1&allCount=71&fbn=Price%2FUnder+%243.99&fbc=1&y=9&fr=StorePrice%2FRSK%2F00000000%2F00000399&x=15&s=A-StorePrice-RSK&parentPage=family) from radio shack
it should start it, but what about turning it off? Will a seperate switch or relay be needed? I looked over the article on bimmerdiy but it wasn't exactly clear.
Sorry for all the questions..couldn't find a clear answer in searching.

I'd PM Pirate_copy. He has pushbutton start. I like the way its implemented on the new BMW's, ou just slide the remote into a slot, and push the start button (which is right next to the slot, props for that BMW). If you just put a small RFID tag in your remote, make some sort of a slot with an RFID reader, and put the button there next to it, that would kick ass. I know that has nothing to do with your question, it just would be slick.
As for what position, I know on Pirate's, it has to be in the RUN position. I believe that you are supposed to wire it in so the button is only hot with the key in run, otherwise anyone could jump in at any time and take off. Not such great security. So, you still would have to replace your lock cylinder......unless you go RFID route. Lol.
As for turning it off, I'll start with saying I'm not a big fan of that switch. The whole assy. mounts in a 1/2" hole, and the button is much smaller, so it will look a bit cheap IMO. I like the E90 switch for design, but the (gasp!) GM switch best for features and design. Neither will work with this mod, though. I'd recommend the Z8 that they used.... Now, if you think about it, the key in RUN is what keeps the ignition wires prepped and hot, and allows the car to stay on. The button is only momentary, so it only sends signal to the starter once, not keeping the engine running. Thus, clicking it won't turn the car off, just send another pulse to the starter, like turning the key forward while its already running. Not good. To turn it off, you have to turn the key to OFF and remove.

I just spliced mine into the ignition loom so i can use either the button to start it or the key
As i need to turn the key to position 2 for the button to work, it is there just to show off. I did intend to get a battery kill switch fitted (and hidden) so i can start the car without the key if i want to but that is a MAJOR security flaw
Personally, i would just get the barrel fixed. Easy job

do any of you have a wiring diagram that might help me out with splicing it into the ignition loop? or would i be able to do it by taking apart the ignition from where the key goes in and finding the wire that way?
