I have a 2001 BMW X5 3.0. On the radio and on the wheel there is a phone button. How do I activate it? I tried to push it and it did nothing. I would like to connect it to my bluetooth enabled cell phone.

Doesn't work with bluetooth without additional hardware. I will try to find info (I read it somewhere) but it is pricey. I have the same issue.

Then what does the stock stuff work with?

they dont work unless your X is pre-wired. Mine works but i have the old school phone setup so when i press the button on my steering wheel, it dials and says "welcome to verizon..." But since technology has progressed big time, the setup on mine (2001) is not compatible/working with carriers. Solution? Bluetooth retrofit kit for $700 or more. Once you've done this, you should be able to use that steering wheel button plus you will have voice control on your nav.

Go to www.bimmernav.com
I put their bluetooth kit in my May 2001 X5 and it works great. I had factory cd nav, and I also upgraded my cd based nav to dvd based with their kit. Also, I upgraded the radio to the new radio to acceptt the BMW sirius radio. All ot this company's kits work as described. You can also install the cradle for your phone as I found the car war pre-wired for phone use. I use a Moto RAZR v3 bluetooth and I love the bluetooth connection. It will use the car's speakers for sound, and you also need to install the BMW latest generation microphone.
Hope this helps!
