Hi,
Parked my 1992 E34 525i Touring Wagon in the garage last night and she was fine. Came out this morning and started it and it is hunting like crazy. Out on the road she runs OK until you slow down and it starts hunting again. Makes it a bit difficult to drive. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks.

Have the codes pulled. Sounds like a miss-fire. Could be anything from ignition coil to O2 sensor.

How do I pull the codes?

How do I pull the codes?

You need a code reader. It plugs into the OBDII module. Most if not all "techs" have one. Some parts places in the US will pull the codes for free. You'll need to shop around. Or you could just have the problem diagnosed. "techs" usually charge 1 hour for this service.

Look for a vacuum hose to have come loose/off or the accordian intake hose to be cracked.

I thought they only started OBDII in late '95. Unless the AU version started early you should have OBDI. Not all places have the tools to read this. If your light is not on there are probably no codes. Search for stomp test for how to pull your codes.

That said.. It sounds like the idle control valve. Try cleaning it. Remove the larger hose on the accordian near the TB (should be about 5 o'clock facing the TB from the left side of the car) and spray deep creep into it. Dont stall the engine but try to get somewhat close.

Vacuum leaks have accounted for most of my idle problems. In my case it was due to dry rot that finally gave up.

Vacuum hoses look OK but I'm darned if I can find the idle control valve. I even got a photo of it off the net but I still can't see it. I disconnected the lead off the Throttle Position Switch and it stopped 'hunting' but the revs just started creeping up until I had to turn it off.

don't wear camo and carry guns... you do that and she will know you don't want her hunting.

It is way down under the intake manifold. Take off the intake accordian and bring a flashlight.
The ICV is part 6 (http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=HJ63&mospid=47414&btnr=13_0381&hg=13&fg=15). It is almost directly centered on the intake mounted to the engine.

Cleaning it is not really a perminant solution but in my case it has allready bought me 2 more years of life out of the ICV. Well worth it for the $5 can I used to clean it.
