There's plenty of info re tire sizing etc. but have not found data to address this question. I am contemplating buying a used set of OE 8 x 17 wheels for BMW 540i, I currenlty have 8 x 17(F) and 9 x 17 (R). What is the max tire width an 8 x 17 will accept safely while minimizing performance give up? The nearest match, per the tire calculator, is to run 245/40/17 tires. Also, since we're on the subject, what is the max tire width for 9 x 17?
I do drive fast at times, and don't mind letting it out from time to time in the hills, but for the most part, I'm a cruiser - gas is way too expensive. Please advise.
