Well I finally went and bought a 328i so my username is 1 litre incorrect :-)

Full history but no receipts - I checked the chassis number with BMW and the dealership and although neither could not confirm exactly why, they said the engine was completely replaced at 50k with a new one in 2000 under warranty, which means it won't be a Nikasil engine anymore, right?

Anyway it drives superb, the 70 miles back were awesome if not a bit frightening at times(!), as I've never been behind the wheel of something so fast.

But then anyway, just as I think I've found my dream motor, I notice a little exhaust spluttering on idle and an ever so slight uneven RPM (I'm being very picky). It's like a little putt putt sound. Revs are generally around 500. Temperature fine. Starts on the turn of the key, clutch gas etc smoothest I've ever come across.

P.S. No I did not notice this putt putt when I bought it!

Get your sensors checked (pull your OBC codes) as you may have a error

My temp sensor is playing up and have the same symptoms

Could just need a good service though

Revs should generally rest at the lowest RPM bar above zero, which is about 700. You sure it's 500?

It rests on the lowest RPM bar above zero, sometimes slightly above it but usually on it. I could have sworn it was 500 but will check tomorrow.
