Hi guys.

As some of you know, my ECU was bad and finaly I had to change it.

Now I have a HUGE, MAJOR problem. As I live in a small city, had to exchange my ECU for another "used in good condition" one via mail.

Very well. I sent my one (silver tag 413) and a couple of days later I received the "new" one. But it was an red tag 413!!!

Ok, I call the guy and he told me that the difference is that the red and black does not have EWS (anti theft) and the silver (my one) had. So What I need to do is to disconnect/cut the 81 wire.

Very well.... I did some research and actually the 81 wire is for the EWS key code function or something.... soooo I did disconnected the cabke (I'm not dumb so I didn't cut it... just put it away).

Well.... the car doesn't start at all. The fuel pump (wich is controlled by the ECU) doesn't work.

So... any idea? Maybe just changing the chip using my old one so the checksum matches again?? I dont know... I'm lost... and concerned because I feel that the guy wont do anything about it and I throwed away US800

Please... if someone has a clue... I would reeeeaaalllyyy appreciate.

I image that your car now thinks the theft device has been cut/disabled and so will not start.

Have yo tried re-connecting the wire?

vehicles from 1/95 are equipped with EWS.There is no work-around procedure for EWS.A used DME would not match with your EWS even if you take it to a dealership and get them to ALIGN EWS with DME so that they would share the same values everytime the key is turned on.If they are not aligned, they would obviously have different values and you wouldn't be able to start the car.If the DME has a removable EPROM/chip,remove the chip out of your old DME and put it in the new one and see if that works.Otherwise my friend, you may be S.O.L. and may have to result in buying a new CODED and VIN specific DME.Goodluck with your ordeal sir.

I had to replace my ECU on my 97. Very painful, I tried many workarounds and eventually ended up just taking it to the dealer to get it totally replaced there. Sorry man, let us know if you figure something out

ehehhe I'm screwed then...

Yes tried, but I really agree with BMW Tech. The problem is to do the idiots who sell it to me to understand that....

One last question. What if i decode my key? It should work dont it?

Why are you changing the DME? If it is a Bosch and shares the same P/N as your old one,why dont you just remove the CHIP/EPROM from the old one and transfer it to the new one. That might work because you havent tampered with it and the data from the last time the vehicle ran is still there.Since it is a chip, everything programmed into it remains in it.

Well, I was changing it becaus the old one was a bit strange (slow reactions) and generating an ECU ERROR code (code 200 if I renember well).

But guys, good news... they sent me another one and now it WORKS!

I guess that they realized that the silver tag IS different and also they probably put my stock chip in the "new" one. So it was only plg and crank it and hear the sweet sound of my bimmer on idle without ANY Exhaust hehehe (I'm changing a bit things on my car...).

So... from 3 months from now the warranty ends and I will open it and take the chip to my EPROM programmer to see if the checksum is from my old bimmer or not.

If it is, it means that if someone need to change the ECU and haves EWS, it's just put your old chip in your new ECU.

Guys, thanks for the info. I will post here when I know the checksum 3 months from now.

My best regards and best wishes for Christmas and New Year!!
