After searching and doing some diagnosing, i'm at the point where I need some additional input.

Car: -1999 328ic (therefore zf transmission)
-31,000 miles, parked extended periods of time but serviced regularly
enough

symptoms: (1)sometimes hard to shift into reverse and 1st. Especially when cold, but intermittently when warmed up. Doesn't matter if the engine is running or not, easy to get into first if the car rolls forward abit (instead of being at a full stop). (2) i don't think i have the notorious 5th gear-shifter bouncing back-to-neutral problem, but there's not alot of positive spring action there. Never a problem getting into any other gear, and sometimes all gears are very smooth.

I'm trying to remedy in baby steps if I can. I replaced tranny fluid with RP synchromax. I'm thinking next I'll try to bleed my clutch slave. Is it possible a bushing refresh would help?? (I'm thinking with the car sitting so much of the time they could be f'd up.)

Given the very low mileage I'm doubting shot synchro's or worn out clutch but I guess it's a possibility. Also I've read about the input shaft splines maybe needing lubed- which I'm sure would be a PIA.

Any advice would be very appreciated

I have a 98' 328i conv. I am seeing the same problem with mine at 100000. Its hard to put the car into first and second when i first start it up. Maybe its cold weather like you said but i am not sure since i just got it this winter. I kinda figured i needed a new clutch but its odd because once it warms up the shifting is fine? So... if no one can add any advice i will try to talk to a local trans guy and report back!

your first and reverse syncros are matched up. if you were to put the car in reverse then first is it easier?? It just sounds like cold fluid and syncros not meshing perfectly.

Reverse then first does make it easier, I believe you are also correct about the cold fluid. I suppose I will just have to get over it for now.. thanks!
